Wrexham are putting together a squad that is ready to take on all challenges in the Championship.

Phil Parkinson will be delighted with the club’s recent transfer activity as six new faces are already through the door in time for the final pre-season clash with Groningen.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney vowed to be ‘aggressive’ and they are keeping to their promise as they are set to smash the club’s transfer record for a third time with the capture of Nathan Broadhead for £7.5m.

The manager also wants to bolster defensive options and Wrexham have made an ‘approach’ for Conor Coady and it could see his former Liverpool teammate Jamie Carragher proved right about the England centre back.

Jamie Carragher believed Conor Coady would be a ‘top’ Championship player

Speaking to Sky Sports back in 2020, pundit Carragher was speaking about the development of Coady and how his rise to being an England international surprised him.

Coady grew up under the guidance of Carragher at Liverpool and has since formed a successful career in the top flight with the likes of Wolves and Everton.

Carragher stated: “Conor mentioned about being realistic in terms of what level he felt he was at, a lot of people asked me about Conor and to be honest I thought Conor would be a top Championship player,

“So what he’s done even though I know him so well as a youngster coming through, when I say it has surprised me but I’ve got so much respect and admiration for him.”

Wrexham are targeting a centre back before their season opener at Southampton and Coady appears to be top of their list.

Coady’s experience would be the perfect foil for the young duo of Max Cleworth and Lewis Brunt at the heart of Parkinson’s back three.

Conor Coady’s Championship record

Whilst Coady has spent the majority of his career playing in the Premier League, he also has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the second tier.

The 32-year-old has played for Huddersfield, Wolves and Leicester City in the Championship and Parkinson will know how good of a leader he really is.

Coady has also won the Championship twice in his career, with Wolves in 2018 and Leicester in 2024. Wrexham are keen to make that jump themselves in the coming years.

If Parkinson can get this deal over the line before the season opener, he will look at his squad with great optimism given the strength in depth in all areas.
