Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham transfer plan is finally revealed, time is quickly running out

Phil Parkinson has now signed seven new players for Wrexham this summer, but there remains a bit of a void in the team as things stand.

Wrexham completed a deal to sign Lewis O’Brien last week. It was a deal that was long in the making for Phil Parkinson’s side and one that has fans increasingly excited ahead of the start of the new campaign.

He became summer signing number six at the Racecourse, joining the likes of Ryan Hardie, Danny Ward, Liberato Cacace, George Thomason, and Josh Windass in joining the Dragons ahead of next season.

It’s a good mixture of players with quality and experience, and it bolsters the team after what was a rather disappointing pre-season tour in Australia and New Zealand. However, there remains a void in the side that some fans on social media have picked up on, which is at centre-back.

Wrexham’s next transfer priority is revealed

Among the latest Wrexham transfer rumours, there seems to be an emphasis on signing yet more attackers. Already in the Wrexham first team there are eight first-team strikers, or attacking players, but Parkinson seemingly wants more.

And according to The Athletic, there are two things that Parkinson still wants to sign this summer: a new striker and a new centre-back. It is at centre-back where Wrexham seem most light as things stand.

Earlier in the summer, Wrexham were linked with a number of centre-backs, but most have either secured new roles or the link has simply died down. One key target appeared to be Harry Darling. Darling watched his Swansea City contract expire, although the Swans were desperate to keep him. In the end, Norwich City signed Darling on a permanent deal and Wrexham turned their attentions elsewhere on the pitch.

The centre-backs linked with Wrexham so far this summer

There hasn’t been a concrete link to a new centre-back at Wrexham for a while now. Earlier in the summer, Jonny Evans was linked with Wrexham but the Northern Irishman instead took on a coaching role at Manchester United.

Then there was Darling, and also Maksym Talovierov who instead joined Stoke City from relegated Plymouth Argyle earlier in the summer.

Released Manchester United youngster Jack Kingdon is also a target for Wrexham, though very little has been said about the teenager potentially arriving in North Wales since his links emerged at the start of summer.

Like with the deals for Cacace and Thomason, Wrexham could announce a potential new centre-back with very little notice. But it now seems like the definite area of focus for Parkinson, or at least it should be.
