My career was going nowhere but Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds helped turn it around at Wrexham

It has been a busy few months for Wrexham on the transfer front, with one player now opening up on his move.

Backed by owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham signed nine new first-team players in the 2024 summer transfer window.

Said stars, for the most part at least, have enjoyed a prolific start to life at the Racecourse Ground.

Lewis Brunt is struggling for minutes at Wrexham and Sebastian Revan has been in and out of the team.

But the other summer additions have all been tremendous successes for the club.

More recently, the Red Dragons had to dip into the free-agent market in order to plug some holes in their squad.

After breaking his leg in late October, centre-forward Jack Marriott will be out injured for four months.

George Evans is also facing a long spell on the sidelines, which left Phil Parkinson needing reinforcements in midfield and up front.

This saw striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and midfielder Matty James signed to short-term deals last month.

Matty James opens up on Wrexham transfer

James had spent the previous three years on the books of Championship outfit Bristol City.

He played 37 times for the Robins in 2023/24 but was then released when his contract ran out at the end of June.

No teams opted to make a move for the midfielder over the summer and at 33, his playing career was at risk of ending with no sides looking to snap him up.

Now though, after securing a move to Wrexham, as per BBC Sport, James has opened up on how ‘desperate’ he was to play football again and expressed how happy he is to have been given the chance to join the Hollywood-owned side.

He said: “I just received a phone call asking if I’d come in and train and I jumped at the opportunity because of where I was at in my own situation.

“I was desperate to be involved in football again, and with it being Wrexham and where the club is, the ambition, anybody would jump at that opportunity.

“Everybody knows where the club is and where it’s going and what it wants to achieve.

“I think there’ll be numerous players out there that would want to be playing for Wrexham, in terms of players who are playing for other clubs now I’m guessing. I’m just really happy to be part of it.”

When will Matty James will make Wrexham debut

After only signing in late October, James is yet to debut for the Welsh outfit but has been named on the bench for their last two fixtures.

However, the Englishman should be given a chance in the team sooner rather than later.

This is because both George Dobson and Andy Cannon have picked up four yellow cards each in the league this season already.

In turn, Parkinson will either rest one or both to ensure they are not suspended for a big game, or, when one of them inevitably picks up a fifth booking, James will likely come in to replace them.
