Wrexham brought in a new midfielder on transfer deadline day, landing Coventry City’s Ben Sheaf despite interest in raiding Norwich City.

Phil Parkinson landed three deadline day signings to finish off retooling his Wrexham squad.

Issa Kabore and Dominic Hyam were the final two signings to arrive, but only after Ben Sheaf completed his deadline day move to Wrexham.

Sheaf joined Wrexham in a £6.5million move from Coventry City, and came off the bench to make his debut in Wrexham’s defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

Wrexham set to face deadline day target Kenny McLean

Sheaf will hope to make his first Wrexham start against Norwich City this weekend, and he could come up against another midfielder targeted by Parkinson.

Reports ahead of transfer deadline day suggested that Wrexham wanted to sign Kenny McLean from Norwich City.

Wrexham clearly wanted to bring in a midfield player with major Championship experience, but a deal for Sheaf seemed to rule out any deal for McLean.

McLean stayed at Norwich as the deadline passed, and he started against Coventry City on Saturday afternoon.

The 33-year-old serves as Norwich captain and will now be in line to play against Wrexham this weekend, when he could have been part of Parkinson’s side.

McLean missed the first two games of Norwich’s season but is now back as a key part of Liam Manning’s starting XI.

Manning has even praised McLean as a ‘born winner’ when speaking to PinkUn, with his leadership qualities clearly valued highly.

The Scot has been an incredible servant to Norwich, racking up 269 appearances for the Canaries, bagging 13 goals and 28 assists along the way.

Now looking to push towards 300 appearances, McLean will be a key man for Wrexham to shut down in the middle of the pitch, especially after QPR cut through Parkinson’s midfield.

Parkinson knows all about McLean’s quality, having targeted him for a move to Wrexham, and he will look for the likes of Sheaf and George Dobson to shut him down at Carrow Road.

Norwich City seeking consistency ahead of Wrexham clash

Wrexham head to Norfolk in search of a response after Saturday’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to QPR.

This won’t be an easy game by any stretch of the imagination, but Norwich are seeking consistency under new boss Manning.

Norwich lost two of their first three games, but then beat Blackburn Rovers away from home before coming so close to beating Coventry City, only to concede in stoppage time.

A record of two wins, two defeats and one draw suggests that Norwich are still finding their feet under Manning.

Crucially, Norwich have lost both of their home games in the Championship this season, and Wrexham will look to add another defeat to that tally this weekend.
