Phil Parkinson’s former club wanted to sign Wrexham’s Ollie Palmer in January, they could now win promotion

Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer didn’t feature against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, but didn’t let that hamper his celebrations.

Wrexham’s journey to the top under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds continues.

Phil Parkinson watched on as Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday afternoon, securing a third straight promotion.

Wrexham will play Championship football next season, a sentence which would have sounded crazy just five years ago.

McElhenney sees more success for Wrexham in the future, but there may be some difficult decisions this summer.

Wrexham’s Ollie Palmer was targeted by Bradford City

Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer have been two heroes of this Wrexham rise, forming a brilliant partnership in attack over the years.

Wrexham’s latest promotion is, of course, another incredible moment, but Mullin and Palmer not being involved just felt wrong.

Mullin and Palmer have been heroes in previous promotion races, but have struggled for playing time at Wrexham in 2025, often not even making the matchday squad in League One.

The pair were left out again on Saturday, but were on the pitch joining in the celebrations, showing no sign of irritation at being on the sidelines as they relished the party atmosphere.

Both Mullin and Palmer may move on for first-team action elsewhere this summer, and the latter certainly attracted interest in January.

Bristol Rovers were keen on Palmer, but one of Parkinson’s former clubs also showed an interest.

The Athletic claim that Bradford City wanted Palmer on loan, but no deal was done in the end.

Parkinson spent five years in charge of the Bantams, who are now chasing promotion from League Two under Graham Alexander.

Bradford sit third in League Two, one point ahead of a Walsall side who have been in freefall in 2025.

A win over Fleetwood Town on the final day of the season would send Bradford to League One – which is where Parkinson left them in 2016.

Alexander may wish that he had Palmer to call on right now, but the Bradford boss could well return for Palmer this summer – especially if promotion can be secured.

Ollie Palmer deserves a Wrexham send-off

Wrexham now have just one game to go in League One, travelling to face Lincoln City this weekend.

There is nothing riding on this game now, and we think this is the perfect time to play Mullin and Palmer in a potential send-off.

Palmer has been a truly incredible character at Wrexham, the kind of guy you just can’t help but love.

Palmer celebrated Wrexham’s promotion on Instagram, but fans may have seen him bartending – or at least attempting to – in Ironworks on Saturday night.

From those celebrations alone, you would not know Palmer had been on the fringes for the last three months.

Palmer hasn’t moaned or complained, just continued to go about his business quietly and then became the life of the party.

A hero until the end, Palmer deserves one last Wrexham appearance if the plan is to move him on this summer, and you can be sure that Wrexham fans will be serenading him like never before.
