Wrexham have experienced many trials and tribulations across the transfer window, with particular struggles in the striker department.

It may have taken them till deadline day but Wrexham finally captured the striker they wanted as Modou Faal joined from West Bromwich Albion.

Faal signed a three-year contract at the Racecourse Ground and became Phil Parkinson’s eighth signing of the summer.

Parkinson was understandably delighted to sign Faal as it’s been a window where capturing a new centre-forward in this market has proven difficult.

Wrexham have been linked with several names previously and one of those earlier this summer is closing in on a move to one of their promotion rivals.

Former Wrexham target Stephen Humphrys now set for Barnsley move

At the beginning of this summer, Wrexham were eying up a triple swoop of Wigan Athletic players, including Tom Pearce, Josh Magennis and Stephen Humphrys.

Although none were signed, Magennis remained in League One with Exeter and Pearce signed for Major League Soccer side Montreal, while Humphrys is still a free agent.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, that could be about to change, as Barnsley are now set to sign the 26-year-old on a free transfer.

Humphrys was released by the Latics after failing to agree on a new contract but he did score nine goals in League One last term and could be a handy pick-up for the Tykes.

For Wrexham, missing out on the ‘powerful’ centre-forward isn’t an issue as signing Faal from West Brom has somewhat alleviated their striker troubles.

Wrexham refreshingly signing younger players

Wrexham’s recruitment policy this summer has changed completely, with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds wanting to sign youngsters with high potential as opposed to experienced players.

Four of the Reds’ eight signings are all aged 23 or under while Dobson, 26 and Rathbone, 27 add significant League One experience to the side, along with centre-back Dan Scarr.

At the age of 29, he’s the oldest player Parkinson has signed this summer, which speaks volumes about the direction the club is heading in.

Although they are targeting a record-breaking third promotion in a row, McElhenney and Reynolds have also accepted that they must build for the future.

Their latest signing Faal – who turned 21 in February – is a sign of their shift in focus and a player who could lead the strikeforce for years to come.

It’s an extremely exciting time to be a Wrexham fan and this is reflected by their policy of signing younger talents.
