‘Really good’ Wrexham ace surely fearing for his future after Phil Parkinson plan becomes clear

We now have a clear idea of what Wrexham are going to do in the 2025 January transfer window.

The Red Dragons recruited well over the summer and have one of the most well-stocked squads in League One.

This may have led some fans to believe that their club were going to be set for a pretty quiet winter window.

However, Shaun Harvey confirmed Wrexham will be active in January in an interview this week, and now, an insight into their plans has been provided.

The main priority for the Welsh outfit in the winter window will be the addition of a new centre-forward.

We revealed on Friday that Wrexham have been offered at least 12 strikers already following reports they want to bring in a new number nine.

But while fans will be pleased to see their club gearing up to make at least one new signing to aid their promotion push, it could spell bad news for one Wrexham ace.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson long-term Wrexham future in doubt

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson joined Wrexham on a free transfer in October following an injury blow to Jack Marriott.

But the former Bolton Wanderers striker has only signed a short-term deal with the Red Dragons, which expires at the beginning of January.

As a result, it is hard to see the forward being offered a fresh contract in early 2025 given the recent Wrexham striker update.

At present, Phil Parkinson has Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Modou Faal, Steven Fletcher, Marriott and Dadi Bodvarsson competing for two positions.

But with Wrexham expected to sign a number nine in January, they would then have seven strikers on their books, which is simply too many.

Marriott, who is the club’s top scorer in the league still, was injured in mid-September and his fourth-month return timeline means he should be back midway through January.

As a result, even though a case can be made that Bodvarsson is a better option than Fletcher right now, it does not make sense to offer him a new deal given another forward should be arriving soon anyway.

What Phil Parkinson said about Jon Dadi Bodvarsson

Bodvarsson made his first league start last weekend when Wrexham were beaten 1-0 by promotion rivals Stockport County.

After the game, Parkinson labelled Bodvarrson ‘really good’ and suggested he will continue to improve with more game time.

He said: “We have brought in Jon Dadi Bodvarsson who has looked really good; he is getting up to speed and just needs game-time, and Paul Mullin is one moment away from getting himself up and running again which I am sure he will.

“We have just got to keep going. I have got a lot of belief in the lads we have got out on the pitch. We have got to keep chipping away. We have got players in the team who can score.”

But even if the Wrexham boss remains a fan of the Icelandic striker, the fact he is out of contract in January means it makes the most sense for him to be the player moved on in order to make room for the January signing.
