Wrexham have completed the signing of Lewis O’Brien in what will be the ‘biggest deal’ in the club’s history, Wrexham Insider understands.
Wrexham signed Josh Windass on a free transfer and central midfield is an area that boss Phil Parkinson has targeted during this summer’s transfer window.
The pre-season games down under showed Wrexham to be lacking in creativity and energy in the middle of the park and the club have now acted.
O’Brien underwent a medical at Wrexham late on Wednesday evening and is now set to sign a record-breaking three-year contract at the Racecourse Ground.

Lewis O’Brien deal is biggest in Wrexham’s history
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have got used to breaking records during their time as owners in North Wales but the deal for O’Brien is set to eclipse anything set before it.
Wrexham Insider’s chief transfer expert Graeme Bailey has explained that O’Brien has completed a medical at the club and is set to become the club’s record transfer.
Bailey stated: “Landing Lewis O’Brien is the biggest deal in Wrexham history – in more ways than one. Yes financially it is huge, but they are signing a Premier League footballer. One who could still play in the top-flight.
“O’Brien is an outstanding player and he will fit like a glove into Phil Parkinson’s system. This really is a landmark deal for Wrexham.”
This is the second time this window that the club have smashed their transfer record following the capture of Liberato Cacace from Empoli.
Wrexham are flexing their financial muscles in this window and more business is expected at the club before the start of their campaign at Southampton.
Phil Parkinson building a Wrexham team for now and the future
The six signings so far this summer have represented a real shift in strategy from Parkinson and Wrexham’s owners.
Signings such as James McClean and Steven Fletcher in the past were experienced players ready to elevate the club in the present moment.
| Wrexham summer signings | Age |
| Ryan Hardie | 28 |
| Danny Ward | 32 |
| Liberato Cacace | 24 |
| George Thomason | 24 |
| Josh Windass | 31 |
| Lewis O’Brien | 26 |
However, the likes of Cacace, O’Brien and George Thomason show that Wrexham are planning to build a side that can compete in the second tier and beyond for years to come.
Parkinson is building a squad with a real blend of youth and experience, now all eyes will be on who departs the other way as the 25-man squad will need to be trimmed.
