Three-time Wrexham promotion winner is ‘considering’ leaving, it’s not Ollie Palmer or Elliot Lee

Wrexham look set to say goodbye to some players before the September 1st transfer deadline, with several seemingly up for sale. Wrexham have done well so far in this summer’s transfer window.

Everybody knew Wrexham would spend well under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, following a record third straight promotion, but few would expect that the club would surpass £30 million in spending.

Last week, Wrexham completed an £8 million deal to sign Doyle from Man City, taking the club’s summer spending past £30 million. It also includes £10 million on club record signing Nathan Broadhead, who signed earlier in the month.

And as Wrexham’s rise continues and the quality of players arriving at the club grows, it’s leaving certain players on the peripheries of the side. One such player is Tom O’Connor.

Tom O’Connor considering Wrexham exit

O’Connor, who’s 26 years old, joined Wrexham during the 2021-22 National League season. In three and a half years at the club, he has helped Wrexham win promotion from the National League, League Two, and League One. And along the way, the Irishman has featured 110 times in all competitions with seven goals for the club.

Last season, O’Connor played 31 times in League One, but he has yet to feature in any competition this season, featuring in just one matchday squad.

Now, journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed on X that O’Connor is considering leaving the Racecourse in search of regular first-team football, having fallen down the pecking order following the arrivals of the likes of Doyle and Conor Coady at centre-back.

What Phil Parkinson said about Tom O’Connor at Wrexham

O’Connor has never been a flashy player for Wrexham. Oftentimes, his good performances can go unnoticed, but manager Phil Parkinson has long been a fan of the Irishman.

Speaking last year, Parkinson gave a clear verdict on O’Connor at Wrexham after beating Grimsby Town in League Two during the 2023-24 season. “Tommy has got class and he’s obviously got a very cool head and you could see that today,” said the Dragons boss.

But as with the likes of Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer and maybe even Elliot Lee, who all helped Wrexham win promotion from the National League, League Two and League One, O’Connor has simply become a victim of the club’s rapid rise, and it may be best for him and the club if they part ways before the September 1st transfer deadline.
