Wrexham have finalised a second departure of the week after allowing Will Boyle to sign for Shrewsbury Town.

Phil Parkinson is seeking new additions to his Wrexham squad, but must also balance incomings with departures.

Wrexham said farewell to Paul Mullin earlier this week, as the striker completed a loan move to League One side Wigan Athletic.

Others will follow Mullin in leaving the STōK Cae Ras, and defender Will Boyle was always likely to be one departure.

Boyle joined Wrexham from Huddersfield Town in 2023 and played an important role in the promotion-winning campaign from League Two.

Boyle fell down the pecking order last season and is now on the move for a fresh opportunity away from Wrexham.

Shrewsbury Town complete Will Boyle signing

Gillingham were in talks to sign Boyle as Gareth Ainsworth appeared to be closing in on the centre-back.

That deal has been hijacked, with Shrewsbury Town making their move to sign Boyle earlier this week.

Boyle has now completed his move to Shrewsbury, joining Wrexham’s cross-border rivals on a two-year contract.

The Shrews have even posted a video mocking Gillingham after hijacking their move for Boyle, as seen below.

Wrexham fans won’t be rushing to cheer on Shrewsbury, but will appreciate Boyle’s efforts over the last two years.

Shrews director of football Micky Moore has explained the move while speaking on Shrewsbury’s official website.

Moore was a key part of Cheltenham Town’s recruitment team during Boyle’s time with the club, and that connection has been key to this move.

Moore praised Boyle’s leadership and experience, believing that he will be a crucial addition both on and off the pitch.

Moore also pointed to Boyle’s winning mentality, having just achieved back-to-back promotions with this Wrexham squad.

“Will is someone I have known for a long time and have worked with previously. We have had a lot of success together,” said Moore.

“He brings standout attributes that will strengthen the group for the challenges ahead. He’s a natural leader, has been part of promotion-winning teams, and his experience will be crucial both on and off the pitch. He will make a big impact on the pitch, off the pitch, in the dressing room and in the community.

“Will is our fourth signing of the summer and – like Tom Anderson, Sam Clucas and Sam Stubbs – he brings a winning mentality and a track record of success. Those qualities will be essential for us next season,” he added.

More Wrexham departures to come

Wrexham’s departures won’t end with Mullin and Boyle.

Others are likely to move on as Parkinson makes changes ahead of the new Championship campaign.

Jacob Mendy may be in a real battle for first-team football in the Championship and is bound to have suitors in League One and League Two.

Fellow left wing-back Sebastian Revan could really benefit from a loan move, and the same goes for striker Modou Faal.

Luke Bolton will surely move on after a frustrating 18-month spell at Wrexham, and Jake Bickerstaff’s time at the club is likely coming to an end.

Homegrown talents Aaron James and Harry Ashfield will likely receive loan interest, with Wrexham considering the best steps for their development.

This could be a busy summer for Wrexham, and that means outgoings to go along with some exciting additions.
