Wrexham appear to be focused on signing a new midfielder as Phil Parkinson’s recruitment drive shows no sign of ending.

Wrexham snapped up Callum Doyle on Thursday night, with Phil Parkinson making the defender his 10th signing of the summer.

Doyle has arrived in a deal worth up to around £8million, and should slot in on the left side of Parkinson’s back three.

Wrexham’s busy summer of spending doesn’t look set to end any time soon, though, and more additions appear to be coming.

Reports suggest that Wrexham are targeting a new midfielder following Saturday’s draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

Three names are in the mix: Jordan James of Rennes, Andy Irving of West Ham United and Southampton’s Will Smallbone.

Parkinson named Elliot Lee and Harry Ashfield on the bench against Wednesday, but neither of them came on.

That may speak to Parkinson not being entirely happy with his midfield options right now, especially with George Thomason, Andy Cannon and Ollie Rathbone all out injured.

Wrexham may not sign all three of those targets, but one or possibly even two could come in as Parkinson looks to keep spending.

Reports last week suggested that Wrexham were ahead of Rangers in the race for Irving, with West Ham demanding around £3.5million.

The Scot has struggled for Premier League action with the Hammers and could leave before the transfer deadline.

West Ham United insider ExWHUEmployee, as quoted by The West Ham Way, reports that West Ham have accepted an offer from Wrexham for Irving’s signature.

However, it’s suggested that Wrexham have not met Irving’s wage demands, and it’s unclear whether another offer will be made.

“West Ham have accepted an offer from Wrexham for Andy Irving. The player has so far turned down their advances because their wage offering did not meet his demands. It remains to be seen whether they will come back with another offer,” they wrote.

What Andy Irving would bring to Wrexham

Irving has been through a remarkable career so far, first coming through the ranks at Heart of Midlothian before heading to Germany with Turkgucu Munchen.

The Scot then excelled in Austria with Austria Klagenfurt, racking up 16 goals in 64 appearances before starting his Premier League career with the Hammers in 2024.

That paints the picture of a midfielder who can bring a real goal threat from midfield, which would be a welcome addition.

Rathbone provided plenty of goals from midfield last season, but his injury means Wrexham lack his presence in the final third.

Irving could go some way to providing that quality, but Wrexham may need to move on to other targets if his wages are outside of the Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds’ wage structure.
