Wrexham fans now in total agreement over Phil Parkinson transfer target – their stance is odd

Wrexham fans are still waiting for their club to sign a player this month but are adamant one man shouldn’t be brought in.

Over three weeks of the 2025 winter window are now behind us but Wrexham are still yet to make a signing.

That does look set to change in the very near future, however, with Wrexham expected to complete a deal for Ryan Longman of Hull City.

Longman is set to undergo his medical with the Welsh outfit before completing a £500,000 transfer.

The Hull ace is a versatile player and should prove himself a solid rotation option for Phil Parkinson.

It’s not just Longman that the club are looking at, however, with Michael Smith linked to Wrexham this month.

Wrexham fans don’t want to sign Michael Smith

After those links emerged, Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl spoke on the Smith to Wrexham rumours but gave little away.

Speculation has continued, however, with the striker left out of the Owls’ matchday squad versus Leeds United at the weekend and remaining on the bench for their clash on Tuesday evening.

Following that game, Wrexham fans took to social media to express their view that they don’t want to sign Smith.

One fan wrote: “Time to move on,” with another adding: “Think we’ve definitely shown our cards too much with Smith, and Wednesday are just going to rinse us for it.”

A third stated: “Wondered if Ryan was hinting at this on Men in Blazers saying do we want to sign 51-year-olds with new hips. I wondered if it was this type of signing.”

“Why do Wrexham want another old big lump with no resale value again Parky should be told no,” a fourth supporter wrote.

Another questioned: “Surely we need a forward with pace?” While a sixth added: “And one that is younger than 33? Such short-sightedness it’s unreal. A strike force that can rival an old age nursing home.”

Claims that Smith is too old are most certainly valid now he has turned 33 years of age.

However, it’s obvious that should he actually sign for the club, he will not be a long-term option.

Wrexham are right in the automatic promotion mix this season and signing a player of Smith’s quality could be just what they need to get over the line and clinch second place.

Operating in January is always difficult anyway so it makes more sense for the Red Dragons to targeted ready-made, proven players now before reassessing their squad in the summer when they know what league they are in.

More strikers will need to be signed away given the age of players like Steven Fletcher and Ollie Palmer. But it’s unlikely any team will be willing to sell a 20-something number nine who is having a great season over the winter.
