Wrexham-owned striker in limbo as loan club already facing January interest in red-hot goalscorer

Wrexham will be focused on two games to see out 2024 in the coming days but the attention is already turning towards the January transfer window.

Phil Parkinson will be looking to celebrate this festive period but will have plenty on his mind.

Wrexham have dropped four points in the last two games with draws against Cambridge United and Bristol Rovers.

Wrexham were leading both games heading into the final 10 minutes but ended up conceding late goals.

Those results – against two struggling League One sides – just weren’t good enough and Parkinson will want a response.

Wrexham take on Blackpool and Wigan Athletic in the coming days before 2025 gets underway – and the transfer window takes centre stage.

Jake Bickerstaff in limbo away from Wrexham

Wrexham fans will be focused on incomings with some key additions potentially crucial to hopes of a third straight promotion.

A striker is on Wrexham’s wish list but one forward still on the books finds himself in limbo.

Wrexham loaned Jake Bickerstaff out to Altrincham on transfer deadline day in August, hoping to get him some regular first-team football.

That hasn’t really worked out though with Bickerstaff predominantly sitting on the bench for the National League side – ironically managed by another Phil Parkinson.

Bickerstaff has been stuck behind Altrincham’s star striker Regan Linney, who has hit 14 goals in the National League this season.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reports that Altrincham are now facing interest in Linney, which could complicate Bickerstaff’s future a little.

Fleetwood Town want Linney and whilst the £200,000 asking price has scared off the Cod Army for now, there will no doubt be other clubs chasing Linney’s signature.

Bickerstaff’s loan runs until January 13 and there may be a willingness from all parties to end the loan there if Linney stays put.

Yet if an early bid comes in for Linney, Altrincham may trust Bickerstaff to step up and take their leading role in attack.

Losing Linney would be an enormous blow for Altrincham and Bickerstaff’s future may well be tied to whether he earns an EFL transfer early in the window.

Bickerstaff may be coming to the end at Wrexham

We expect Wrexham to say goodbye to Jordan Davies in 2025 and it may be a similar story for Bickerstaff.

The striker started his career at Wrexham and returned to the club after a brief spell in the Liverpool ranks.

We would love nothing more than for Bickerstaff to become a Wrexham hero but he is now 23 and isn’t playing regularly for Altrincham.

Last season’s loan spell with Accrington Stanley didn’t really work out either and Wrexham’s rapid rise means Bickerstaff is being left behind.

A permanent departure seems likely in 2025 and whether it’s Altrincham or elsewhere, we would imagine that Bickerstaff will be moving in the coming months.
