Deadline day is upon us, and for Wrexham, it could be the cherry on top of a brilliant summer transfer window so far.

Even if Wrexham don’t go on to sign anyone on deadline day, it’s still been a really ambitious and exciting summer for the club.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have spent more than £30million on new players already, with the club smashing their transfer record with the £10million signing of Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town last month.

In total, Wrexham have signed 10 new players this summer. And Phil Parkinson’s side seem poised for more ahead of the 7pm transfer deadline with reports that Ben Sheaf is close to signing for the club.

The latest on Ben Sheaf to Wrexham

Sheaf, 27, is a former Arsenal academy graduate who has since made his name with Coventry City. A central midfielder, Sheaf has made a total of 177 appearances for the Sky Blues, with nine goals and 11 assists along the way.

He’s a key player for Frank Lampard’s side and now it’s reported that Wrexham are closing in on a £6.5m deal for Sheaf, which will take the Dragons’ summer spending up towards the £40million mark.

Ben Sheaf once outplayed Scott McTominay and Man United at Wembley

If Wrexham fans want to get an idea of how good Sheaf is, they only have to look at his performance for Coventry City in their FA Cup semi-final thriller against Man United at Wembley in 2024.

United beat Coventry City on penalties after throwing away a three-goal lead, with Sheaf’s Coventry coming from behind to make the game 3-3.

On the pitch that day were some top players in Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford to name a couple. Playing opposite Sheaf in midfield was Scott McTominay too; the Scot has since gone on to become a world class midfielder with Napoli.

McTominay has been nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or with Napoli, but just one year ago Sheaf outplayed him in midfield, earning an 8.1 score on FotMob compared to McTominay’s 7.2

Sheaf has proven that he can compete with the best and he’ll no doubt slot into Wrexham’s XI alongside Lewis O’Brien, and one of Matty James or George Dobson for the time being.
