Wrexham have received a fresh update in their pursuit of Sheffield Wednesday striking duo Bailey Cadamarteri and Michael Smith.

The transfer deadline is fast approaching and Wrexham are still looking to add a striker to their ranks.

In the absence of Paul Mullin, who is closing in on a return to action, Phil Parkinson has mainly utilised Jack Marriott and Ollie Palmer as a partnership up top.

The pair linked up wonderfully in Wrexham’s 3-2 victory over Wycombe, with Palmer chesting the ball down for Marriott, who smashed his volley into the back of the net.

It proved that the Reds can still score goals when Mullin isn’t fully fit, although even with the 29-year-old returning to the fold, extra firepower is required for the Welsh outfit to challenge near the top end.

Wrexham’s chase for a striker has resulted in several links to players, either on loan or permanently.

The Reds wanted to sign Luton Town’s John McAtee but he instead signed for League One rivals Bolton Wanderers.

Wrexham also eyed a loan move for Tottenham striker Will Lankshear, with Sunderland and Hull City also showing interest. However, the chances of signing him were dealt a hammer blow when Spurs manager Ange Postecoglu wanted him to be a part of his first-team squad.

Most recently, Wrexham have wanted Sheffield Wednesday duo Bailey Cadamarteri and Michael Smith.

Wrexham have held talks to sign Smith while the Reds were said to be the front runners to land Cadamarteri earlier this month.

Now, The Star have provided an update on the Wednesday pair, citing that young striker Cadamarteri is ‘expected to leave’ to gain regular minutes with ‘widespread EFL interest’ in his signature.

Whereas, they state that Smith is still subjected to interest from Wrexham but a deal isn’t thought to be ‘especially close’.

Why the deal for Michael Smith could now be off

There is still hope that Wrexham can still land Cadamarteri, who the Owls want to send out on loan to gain valuable experience.

The teenager has scored five goals in 27 appearances for Wednesday and is still a very raw striker, unlike Smith, who is proven in League One.

Smith has scored 34 goals combined in his last two third-tier campaigns; 18 for Rotherham in 2021/22 and 16 for the Owls in 2022/23.

He’s a reliable source of goals and a nuisance for the opposition to mark due to his height and strength helping him outmuscle his rival defenders.

Sadly, it doesn’t appear that Wednesday will sign their number-one target anytime soon, with the 32-year-old earning regular minutes under Danny Rohl.

Smith scored from the bench in the 4-0 win over Plymouth Argyle, started the Carabao Cup victory against Hull City and was then introduced at half-time on Sunday as the Yorkshire outfit were thrashed 4-0 by Sunderland.

Given his positive involvement in the opening matches of the campaign, the likelihood of him departing now looks slim, although a move shouldn’t be completely ruled out, as anything can happen between now and deadline day.
