Wrexham will need to go back to the drawing board, with it looking likely that they will miss out on one Championship centre-back.
The 2025/26 Championship season is near, and Wrexham are still looking to add firepower to the squad.
Wrexham clinched three successive promotions under Red Dragons boss Phil Parkinson, but their next chapter is set to provide the club’s biggest hurdle yet.
Their recent pre-season tour in Australia and New Zealand has shown that Wrexham are in dire need for further recruitment, with a centre-back addition high on the priority list for Wrexham.
Unfortunately, it now looks as though Parkinson will miss out on one of his top targets, with a centre-back he was keen on reportedly opting to move to a Championship rival side.

Wrexham set to miss out on Alfie Jones as Middlesbrough swoop in for Hull City star
Wrexham were linked with a move for Hull City’s Alfie Jones, with the Tigers keen to generate funds by moving on the defender.
Jones was targeted because of his Championship experience, with it clear that the Hull City star would transform Wrexham and their backline.
However, Hull Live have since reported that Jones is ‘expected to complete a move to Middlesbrough in the coming days,’ suggesting that the Championship side have managed to move far ahead of Wrexham in the pursuit of the defender.
The fee that Wrexham were keen to splash on Jones was touted around the £3m mark, but Jones has now made his mind up, showing a keen desire to move to the Riverside Stadium.

Wrexham have plenty of time to secure key transfer targets
Phil Parkinson will be greatly disappointed that Wrexham were unable to advance on a move to sign Jones, someone who would have provided Championship experience and stability for the backline.
Fortunately, plenty of time remains until the summer transfer window, albeit there are plenty of advantages for Parkinson to bring the recruits in early on.
Wrexham were caught out on this occasion, but there will certainly be players out there for Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac to target. Plenty of cash will need to be spent this summer, but after what Parkinson has achieved whilst at Wrexham, he deserves the significant backing needed from Reynolds and Mac.
