Wrexham have immense pulling power thanks to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds but one target turned down a move this year.

The Red Dragons made nine signings during the 2024 summer transfer window and two more free-agent additions in October.

One recent signing, Matty James, recently expressed delight at signing for Wrexham, and shared his opinion that a lot of Championship players will now want to sign for the club despite them being in League One.

James’ verdict appears to be pretty true as we revealed on November 22nd that Wrexham have been offered at least 12 strikers heading into the 2025 winter transfer window.

No concrete names have emerged at present but the Welsh outfit are expected to bring in a new number nine in January.

Now though, a previous Wrexham striker target has opened up on why he rejected a move to Wales.

Why Stephen Humphrys rejected Wrexham

It was reported earlier this year that Wrexham were keen on Stephen Humphrys in January.

Rumours linking Humphrys to the Red Dragons returned in May before he was then released by former side Wigan Athletic and became a free agent over the summer.

Now, after joining Barnsley for free, the forward has opened up on why he turned down a move to Wrexham, as per Wigan Today.

He said: “At the time, Wrexham had come in for me, who were paying really good wages…and I still didn’t want to leave Wigan for Wrexham. I think they put an actual bid in for me, but I didn’t want to leave Wigan, so that was Wrexham off the table.

“There was another club, in Europe, who also came in with really good money on the table. Again, I said no, I said ‘let’s get this sorted here, I want to stay’. But God’s honest truth, there wasn’t another contract offer from that day forward.

“My position was always: ‘This is where I’m at, I’m turning down more money than I’ve been offered elsewhere, I’m more than happy to stay here for less money – not less than what I was on, but less than other clubs are offering’…because I wanted to stay.”

Stephen Humphrys now in League One battle with Wrexham

After his release from Wigan, Humphrys secured a move to League One outfit Barnsley on August 30th.

The forward has since made 10 league appearances for the Yorkshire outfit, scoring four goals.

Barnsley are firmly in the promotion picture right now and just two points off Wrexham in the League One table going into the weekend.

Parkinson’s side host Barnsley at the Racecourse on December 3rd and will no doubt be hoping that their former transfer target has a quiet day in front of goal.
