Charlton Athletic boss slams Wrexham wing back Sebastian Revan after 2-2 draw

Wrexham suffered late heartbreak on Saturday afternoon as a late equaliser handed Charlton Athletic a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Phil Parkinson visited familiar surroundings as Wrexham headed down to South London to take on Charlton Athletic.

Parkinson spent four years with the Addicks as assistant manager and then manager before leaving back in January 2011.

More than a decade on, Parkinson returned to The Valley with Wrexham and came so close to leaving with all three points.

An own goal put Wrexham in front, only for Macaulay Gillesphey to level it up with a looping header Arthur Okonkwo.

Andy Cannon’s goal appeared to have won it for Wrexham but there was late drama with Matt Godden’s injury-time penalty levelling up the game again.

Charlton Athletic boss rages at Wrexham star

Wrexham can feel more than a little aggrieved.

Charlton’s last-gasp penalty was harshly given for handball against the returning Max Cleworth as Wrexham battled to get over the line.

Godden stepped up to score and left Wrexham players crestfallen as three points turned into just one.

Charlton boss Nathan Jones wasn’t happy either though as he slammed one Wrexham player following the final whistle.

Speaking to South London Press, Jones branded Sebastian Revan’s late challenge on Tyreece Campbell as a ‘disgrace’.

Revan, signed from Aston Villa over the summer, was brought off the bench and replaced Ryan Barnett out wide.

Revan rather cynically took Campbell down and Jones suggested that Revan should have been sent off, believing that he could have caused Campbell a serious injury.

“The tackle on TC was a disgrace,” said Jones. “We talk about rules – I’d rather get punched in the face than someone wipe me clean out. That’s a young boy, 20 years of age, running full pelt and someone can come from behind and boot him – that provides proper injuries.

“That is a red card, for me. That was a disgraceful challenge. That should be ruled out because it can break legs, break ankles and change people’s lives. I don’t like that,” he added.

Wrexham come through testing week unbeaten

That incident may not have even crossed Phil Parkinson’s mind just yet with Wrexham no doubt just gutted by the defeat.

This was always going to be a testing week as Wrexham faced trips to Rotherham United and Charlton Athletic either side of a home clash with Huddersfield Town.

Two of those were in the Championship last season and Charlton are always going to be a threat in League One.

Wrexham managed to claim five points from those three games, picking up one win and two draws.

Parkinson will be so disappointed that Wrexham’s tally doesn’t stand at seven points from those three games but an unbeaten run in this period should still be celebrated.

Wrexham’s next focus is the FA Cup first round clash with Harrogate Town but Parkinson will be pleased with his side’s displays in the past week.
