Palmer Scores, veteran shines: Wrexham player ratings vs Gillingham

Wrexham welcomed Gillingham to The Racecourse knowing a win could take them up to second place in League Two. They grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

With a set of good results behind them, Wrexham wanted to keep their unbeaten run intact as they looked to move up the league table.

It is safe to say that, Phil Parkinson went to his tried and trusted side and went with a starting XI full of experienced heads.

One of those more experienced players opened the scoring with less than a minute played. Ollie Palmer tapped in after the ball bundled around the box. Jacob Mendy’s cross caused havoc for the Gills’ defence and the Reds made them pay.

It took until the 71st minute for the three points to be secure as Ben Tozer grabbed his first League Two goal of the season. A wicked cross from Mendy was flicked home wonderfully by the veteran Englishman.

That was how the scores stayed and with other results going their way, Parkinson’s side moved up to second. Despite having less possession on the day, the home side created more and higher quality chances and were deserving of the win.

Wrexham player ratings

Arthur Okonkwo- 7/10

Hard to give a rating for the youngster on loan from Arsenal for this game. Made his saves and kept a clean sheet but didn’t have much to do on the day overall.

Anthony Forde- 6/10

Another hard one for these ratings. Forde was solid for the duration, maybe just didn’t get involved as much as we know he can.

Aaron Hayden- 7/10

Solid as always. Although this is another one which is difficult for these ratings, he is deserving of a good score. Didn’t have to do much but contributed to that clean sheet.

Ben Tozer- 9/10

With a goal and a clean sheet, it is hard to argue with a top score in these ratings. Always puts in a shift and was top drawer once again. Was involved in the first goal and scored the second, an ideal performance.

Thomas O’Connor- 7/10

Like Hayden, Thomas O’Connor was solid and deserving of a decent rating. Nothing to write home about but another who contributed to the clean sheet.

Jacob Mendy- 8/10

An assist and a clean sheet on his return to the team. A good wing-back performance and more than deserving of a good performance. Like Tozer, he contributed to both goals, with two great crosses in both halves.

James Jones- 7/10

Yet another solid performer on the day 84% pass accuracy and two out of three crosses worked. Another who didn’t surprise anybody but was good on the day.

George Evans- 8/10

What a performance. 89% pass accuracy and 7 recoveries just sums him up on the day. Breaking up play and getting the team playing up. Great player and a great signing so far.

Elliot Lee- 7/10

No goal for Lee which customarily comes with him starting. He was solid enough and made the most successful dribbles throughout the game. Deserving of a solid score on these ratings.

Sam Dalby- 7/10

It will be of disappointment for Sam Dalby not to get on the scoresheet but he still played well. He had one big chance and missed it but hopefully, he won’t let that drag him down.

Ollie Palmer- 9/10

Without Mullin, we hoped Palmer would step up and he did with style. With just a minute on the clock. 13 duels won was the most in the match and deserving of one of the best ratings. A scrappy goal but the Englishman will not care one bit.
