Wrexham suffered a disappointing defeat against a weakened Sydney FC team on Tuesday. But there was a strong turnout for the game nonetheless.

Friendly or not, Wrexham fans want to see good results always. But on Tuesday, Phil Parkinson’s side disappointed against a Sydney FC side which fielded a lot of youngsters.

After taking a first half lead through an own goal, the Dragons then conceded either side of half-time as Wrexham lost 2-1 against Sydney FC in the end.

It was another game where Parkinson made wholesale changes during the game. This time, though, he made 10 changes after an hour of the game.

Wrexham finish their pre-season tour of Australia with a game against Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on the 19th, before then returning to Wales as they gear up for their Championship opener against Southampton on August 9th.

Sydney FC vs Wrexham attendance revealed

Ahead of Wrexham’s pre-season opener against Melbourne Victory, which the Dragons won 3-0, there was a lot of chatter online about ticket sales for this pre-season tour.

Going off of the ticket outlets, ticket sales for Wrexham’s Australia tour looked rather low, and against Melbourne there was a lot of empty seats. But the attendance for Wrexham against Melbourne Victory in the end surpassed the 30,000 mark.

And that number was topped in Sydney as more than 40,242 fans turned out, selling out the Allianz Stadium which has a capacity of 42,500.

Wrexham posted the number online during the game, labelling it an ‘incredible’ turnout which it certainly was, albeit with Wrexham fans watching a poor result in the end.

When does the summer transfer window officially close?

There were a lot of takeaways from the game against Sydney FC. But perhaps the most pressing one is that this Wrexham squad is nowhere near ready for the Championship, and nowhere near ready to take on Southampton at St Mary’s in less than a month’s time.

Wrexham are linked with several players right now, and Parkinson says the club are talking to new signings whilst out in Australia. But there remains a distinct lack of new faces in the squad as of yet.

The summer transfer window closes on September 1st and so there’s plenty of time for Wrexham to get some quality in. But Parkinson now faces the challenge of getting those players through the door with enough time to bed into the squad and so on, before the new season starts.

For all the fans that Wrexham might have in Australia and around the world, the club still has a lot of work to do if they’re to compete in the Championship next season.
