Wrexham faced off with Harrogate Town in a first-round FA Cup meeting on Sunday afternoon.

Wrexham turned their attention away from the tough 2024/25 League One season this weekend, instead eyeing success in the FA Cup.

The Red Dragons made it to the fourth round of the competition last year before being knocked out by Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers.

This weekend’s opponents, on paper, presented a much easier test but they are a side Phil Parkinson has never beaten.

Harrogate Town were excited to draw Wrexham ahead of kick-off and were no doubt keen to cause something of a cup upset.

Harrogate’s boss made his feelings on Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds clear ahead of the game, highlighting the ‘glamour attached’ to the Welsh outfit now the Hollywood duo are at the helm.

Wrexham fans frustrated with Paul Mullin vs Harrogate Town

It was a frustrating first 45 for Wrexham, who dominated the opening 20 minutes before a Jasper Moon header put Harrogate 1-0 up with 24 minutes gone.

This came despite the fact the Red Dragons had a plethora of chances to take the lead early on, the majority of which fell to the club’s record scorer, Paul Mullin.

However, Mullin was far from his best and drew the ire of plenty of Wrexham fans on social media, one of which even claimed that time was up for the striker.

He said: “Times got to be up soon for Mullin, been a hell of a servant for the club but times are changing.”

Another Wrexham fan wrote: “Mullin could have had hat-tricks. Need to repeat the first 20 minutes again and knock their confidence back down.”

A third added: “Mullin end product needs to be much better. Had enough chances to be well ahead.”

A fourth supporter stated: “Mullin has been ‘off’ more often than not this season with his strikes and not just missing by a little missing by a lot.”

A fifth Wrexham fan added: “Mullin not 100 percent definite lack of goalscorers in the side.”

A few fans on social media also expressed their displeasure at the likes of Ollie Palmer and Sebastian Revan as well as Mullin, with one fan writing: “Mullin, Rathbone are total crap today. Revan also poor. Barnett getting stifled too.”

Another fan simply stated: “Front two finishing is embarrassing.”

Wrexham striker options to replace Paul Mullin

Wrexham fans were pretty harsh in their assessment of Mullin on Sunday, even if he was not at his best.

But the 29-year-old has struggled somewhat to rekindle his best form after returning from injury.

He has netted just once in 11 League One ties this term, though he did only start four of those matches.

However, right now at least, Wrexham don’t really have a direct replacement for Mullin in their squad with Jack Marriott out for four months.

Modou Faal and free-agent signing Jon Daoi Boovarsson are more suited to playing in the Palmer role due to their physical presence, meaning Mullin is unlikely to be dropped even if fans are not happy with him.
