Wrexham sources reveal club’s stance on offering Jack Marriott a new contract after injury lay-off

The future of Jack Marriott at Wrexham has been a talking point during the early stages of 2024/25.

Jack Marriott joined Wrexham from Fleetwood Town in February 2024 for an undisclosed fee.

The striker endured a rough debut campaign with the Red Dragons, scoring just one in his first 17 outings during the second half of the 2023/24 season.

But after Paul Mullin suffered an injury over the summer and with new signing Modou Faal not ready to play regular football, Marriott was offered a chance to impress in the early stages of the current campaign.

The 30-year-old grasped that opportunity with both hands, playing some of the best football of his career.

Wrexham fans labelled Marriott ‘incredible’ after his showing against Northampton Town in October.

He scored his fifth League One goal of the season in that match and remains the club’s top scorer this term just ahead of Elliot Lee.

Wrexham stance on new Jack Marriott contract

However, the centre-forward was dealt a major blow shortly after his starring display in the win over Northampton.

Marriott will be out injured for four months after breaking his leg in late October.

Such a horrific injury is never good, but it has come at an especially bad time for the forward, who was playing for a new contract with his current deal set to expire at the end of 2024/25.

Had he not suffered an injury and kept up his early-season form, Wrexham would surely have been quick to tie him down beyond 2025.

Now though, his future at the Racecourse is hanging in the balance. Sources close to The Wrexham Insider understand that the club will now wait until Marriott returns from injury to decide his future.

There is even less room for sentiment in Wrexham’s future given they might be in the Championship next season and it will be up to Marriott to prove he needs a new contract.

It is an unfortunate situation for the Wrexham forward, whose future is now heavily in doubt due to no fault of his own.

More Wrexham stars out of contract soon

Aside from Marriott, all of James Jones, Jacob Mendy, Anthony Forde, Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard are in the final 12 months of their contracts.

Given Fletcher is 37 and struggling to start games now, he is unlikely to be offered a new contract by the Red Dragons.

Elsewhere, Phil Parkinson offered hope to Forde regarding his future recently, suggesting he could still be registered in January after being left out of the squad for the first half of 2024/25.

But with Wrexham having Championship aspirations, a few difficult decisions are likely to be made on players who had previously been integral to the club.
