Wrexham were looking to improve on their recent League One form when they travelled to Northampton Town.
Wrexham have recently beaten Bolton Wanderers and Port Vale in the EFL Trophy but their results in the league have been patchy.
A 2-1 win over Crawley Town brought a much-needed end to a run of three fixtures without a victory.
However, that small winless spell did ensure that Wycombe Wanderers were able to keep a four-point gap between themselves and Phil Parkinson’s men.
Northampton Town kicked off the weekend sat in 17th place but as this clash was away from the Racecourse Ground, a tough 90 minutes was expected for Parkinson’s players.
Their away record is poor this term but fans will have been hoping their recent signings would bring an end to that, especially against the ‘weaker’ teams in the division.

Wrexham fans react to Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer snub vs Northampton Town
Sam Smith scored his first Wrexham goal to put the home side 1-0 up after 19 minutes on Saturday.
Ollie Rathbone made it 2-0 moments later but one of the main talking points during the match from fans was both Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer missing out on the matchday squad.
Mullin has a minor shin injury but even so, supporters of the Red Dragons took to social media to express their thoughts on both he and Palmer missing out.
One fan wrote: “I miss seeing Mullin and Palmer, but Smith and Rodriguez up front have created havoc for Northampton. I’m torn, should I feel bad for Mullin and Palmer or just happy we’re up 2-0?”
A second replied: “This is likely the best thing for Mullin and Palmer. They’re both tough competitors and when their backups start producing, it forces them to kick it up into another gear. Win/win for the club.”
A third added: “No room for Mullin or Palmer on the bench. They can’t be happy surely. How can Mulls get back to his best without minutes on the pitch, even if that’s sub appearances.”
“Crazy how one of Mullin or Palmer wasn’t moved on in January,” a fourth fan stated.
While a fifth wrote: “Mulls and Ollie out again, miss them.

Wrexham fans may need to move on from Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer
It’s easy to see why some Wrexham fans aren’t overly happy about the duo missing out against Northampton.
Signed in the very early stages of the takeover, both strikers have been so crucial to the Welsh side climbing up to League One.
But their lack of goals this season – six between them in the league – likely means it’s time Wrexham start to look at replacing them.
Mullin and Palmer were linked with exits earlier this month and though they stayed put, their days at the Racecourse are seemingly numbered now.
