The dynamic of Welsh club football is changing with Wrexham rapidly becoming arguably the best team in the country.

For a long time, Cardiff City and Swansea City have been the two top teams in Welsh club football. But Wrexham have risen from the National League to the Championship under owners Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds in the space of just three seasons, and now the Dragons are arguably the team to beat.

Last season, as Wrexham won promotion from League One, Cardiff City were relegated to it. It leaves just Wrexham and Swansea City in the second tier this season, though Phil Parkinson’s side are yet to pick up a win or even a single point.

Last time out, Wrexham lost 3-2 at home to West Brom in the Championship, but there is still plenty of time in the transfer window for the Dragons to complete some signings. One such signing that Parkinson is considering is a swoop for Cardiff City’s Calum Chambers.

Cardiff City boss responds to Wrexham’s interest in Calum Chambers

It’s becoming clear that Parkinson wants to sign another new defender this summer. So far, Wrexham have signed nine new players after completing a deal to sign Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town last week, but only one new centre-back has arrived in Conor Coady.

There have been links to the likes of Jack Robinson and Chris Mepham, but more recently Wrexham have been linked with Chambers at Cardiff City. Last week, we revealed that former Arsenal player Chambers is on Wrexham’s radar, but responding to the press, Bluebirds manager Brian Barry Murphy told WalesOnline: “I’ve heard nothing.” And then asked whether or not he thinks Chambers will be at Cardiff for the rest of the season, Barry Murphy simply replied: “Absolutely.”

Wrexham may not need Calum Chambers as £8m transfer close

Wrexham have not been afraid to spend the money this summer. Just last week, the club smashed their transfer record with the £10m signing of Broadhead, and now it looks like they’ll spend almost the same amount on signing Callum Doyle from Manchester City. On Tuesday morning, it was reported that Wrexham are closing in on a deal to sign Doyle worth £8m.

It will be the club’s second highest transfer fee of all time, and it will add a young and exciting defender to their ranks, and that could well hit on the head any kind of deal for Chambers or even Robinson and Mepham. Wrexham clearly had several targets in mind, but it looks as though a deal for Doyle has materialised first.

That said, if Wrexham could snap up Chambers on a good deal, then it would still be a good addition to a defence that could do with perhaps two more bodies before the September 1st deadline.
