Crewe Alexandra ace previews Wrexham clash after experiencing ‘amazing atmosphere’ last season

Wrexham are back in action on Tuesday night as League Two side Crewe Alexandra visit in the knockout stages of the EFL Trophy.

Wrexham secured a big win on Saturday afternoon, travelling away to Burton Albion and coming home with three points.

Storm Darragh was wreaking havoc but Wrexham grabbed a 1-0 victory.

Home form has been sensational with Wrexham racking up 200 home points under Phil Parkinson since his appointment in 2021.

Wrexham haven’t been quite as strong away from home though, so winning on Saturday – and picking up a fourth victory in a row – was a huge boost.

Now it’s back to the EFL Trophy with Wrexham hosting Crewe Alexandra after progressing through the group stage.

Crewe Alexandra ace on facing Wrexham

Wrexham beat Salford City and Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-21’s before a draw at Port Vale, securing a passage into the next round.

Parkinson and co are now into the last 16 of the Northern section and will be looking to progress against League Two Crewe.

Parkinson is almost certain to rotate his squad and give fringe players a chance to shine.

This will still be a strong Wrexham side though and Crewe will be looking to cause an upset.

Crewe midfielder Jack Powell has now commented on the game and looked back to last season’s meeting between the two sides at the STōK Cae Ras.

Crewe claimed a 3-3 draw at Wrexham last season with Steven Fletcher scoring an injury-time leveller to salvage a point for 10-man Wrexham.

Powell noted that Crewe played well and were actually better than Wrexham on the day despite Parkinson’s side eventually winning promotion.

Powell felt that it was an ‘amazing atmosphere’ on his last visit to Wrexham and is hoping to make a real impact in this latest meeting.

“If you look back at the game we played there last season, it was an amazing atmosphere, a real good game and I thought were probably the better team against a team that went on and got promoted.

“I thought we played well there last season. It’s a good game to play in and all of us want to be on the pitch – unfortunately, all of us can’t be on the pitch but if I get the opportunity to play, I’ll just be looking forward to it and hopefully I’ll be able to show what I can do,” he added.

Three Wrexham players who must start v Crewe Alexandra

Parkinson will shake up his squad and a number of players really need starts in this one.

Paul Mullin is a perfect example with the striker still seeking his best form this season.

Mullin didn’t impress Wrexham fans on Saturday and needs to find his sharpness; starting against Crewe may be the ideal opportunity for him.

Dan Scarr is another player who needs the minutes having lost his place in the starting lineup in recent weeks.

Eoghan O’Connell has forced his way back into the side and that leaves Scarr needing a chance.

Josh Adam should also feature with the young midfielder still waiting for a first league appearance in a Wrexham shirt.

Wrexham signed Adam in September but he has only featured once, starting against Port Vale in Wrexham’s last EFL Trophy game.

An opportunity to shine here would be ideal for Adam as Wrexham seek another victory in front of the STōK Cae Ras crowd.
