Wrexham have made history with a third straight promotion having beaten Charlton Athletic at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday evening.

There will be no need for final-day nerves or nail-biting.

Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday evening, securing promotion to the Championship in the process.

Wycombe Wanderers lost at Leyton Orient earlier on Saturday, leaving Wrexham with a clear equation – one win to make history.

Wrexham duly obliged, racing into a 2-0 first-half lead thanks to Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith.

Smith added number three late on, handing Wrexham all three points and a remarkable third straight promotion.

The party can now begin with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds both in town to witness Wrexham getting over the line once again.

Jay Rodriguez enjoys double promotion success

Wrexham’s victory means striker Jay Rodriguez has enjoyed a double promotion boost in the last week.

Rodriguez said an emotional goodbye to Burnley in January as he departed his boyhood club for Wrexham.

Burnley clinched promotion back to the Premier League last week, beating Sheffield United at Turf Moor to secure a return to the top flight.

Rodriguez was surely delighted to see the Clarets return to the Premier League at the first time of asking but had his own promotion dream to fulfil.

Wrexham got the job done on Saturday evening, with Rodriguez starting alongside Sam Smith in attack once again.

Rodriguez was able to savour his own promotion on Saturday, and the victory means the striker could receive two promotion medals.

Jay Rodriguez to win two promotion medals

Teams who win promotion as runners-up still receive a trophy and medals, just like those who win the league or the play-offs.

Wrexham players celebrated on the pitch after the final whistle, coming back out from the dressing room with medals around their necks.

We took a look through the 2024-25 EFL Handbook to find out whether striker Rodriguez will be in line for not one promotion-winners medal, but two.

The rules state that a player must play 25% of a club’s league fixtures in that season to win a medal.

25% of Burnley’s 46 Championship games comes out to just 11.5 – and Rodriguez played in 20 games for the Clarets before joining Wrexham, starting eight and coming off the bench in 12.

‘To be eligible to receive a Championship, League One or Two winners medal, a player must have been named on the team sheet in at least 25% of the Club’s league fixtures in that season. Any medals agreed over and above those detailed above will be at cost to the Club concerned.’ rule 38.2 states.

Rodriguez will therefore be in line for two medals, though the rules state that 25 medals will be given out to players and additional medals can be supplied upon request.

Rodriguez is such a huge Burnley hero that we can’t imagine they would leave him out of their promotion celebrations – even at an additional cost!

The situation is similar to that of former Wrexham defender Ritchie de Laet back in 2016.

De Laet won a Premier League medal and a Championship promotion medal with Leicester City and Middlesbrough respectively, as noted by The Guardian.

This is pretty much the dream end to the season for Rodriguez, whose decision to drop into League One has now paid off with a promotion back to the second tier.

Matty James and Rodriguez both support Burnley and will have loved how the promotion picture has shaped up for them in the last few days, both personally and professionally.
