Wrexham landed a major blow in the race for League One promotion with their 1-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

Phil Parkinson sent a strong message to the Wrexham dressing room after the victory. calling for celebrations to be kept to a minimum with nine tough matches still to go in the campaign.

Wrexham moved three points clear in second place in the League One table and are now hoping Steve Evans can do the Red Dragons a promotion favour as Rotherham host Wycombe in the promotion chaser’s game in hand.

A win for Rotherham would be the icing on the cake for Parkinson’s side after Sam Smith’s wonder strike brought such positivity to the club but there may be another challenge on the horizon from now until May.

EFL expert believes Wycombe are not the biggest threat to Wrexham

Speaking on the League One Lowdown podcast, EFL expert Jamie Johnson believes that Wrexham and Wycombe will be pipped by another club in the promotion race.

Johnson stated: “I think they [Charlton] are going to get the automatic spot, I think Charlton are streets ahead of them [Wycombe and Wrexham] at the minute.”

The Addicks sit just five points behind the Red Dragons in fourth place currently and are unbeaten in their last six league games, including five wins within that run.

Wrexham host Charlton in their final home game of the season at the Racecourse Ground in late April and it could prove to be a pivotal clash in the race for Championship football.

Wrexham need to focus on one game at a time in promotion race

It is easy to get swept away with what other sides are doing during a promotion race but Parkinson will be experienced enough to remind the Wrexham squad that they can only worry about themselves during the run in.

Wycombe also have to face Charlton before the end of the season and as long as Wrexham can continue to replicate performances like their last one, they will pick up many more victories along the way.

Key players are also coming into form at just the right time for the Red Dragons, Smith has scored two in his last three and Wycombe were in awe of Arthur Okonkwo after he made some unbelievable stops in the win.

Next up is a visit to North Wales from old rivals Stockport County and Parkinson will know that he will need his key men to step up to the plate yet again in order to secure another vital three points.
