Wrexham’s 1-0 victory at Wycombe Wanderers has left them currently sitting in second place and the final automatic League One promotion place.
Wrexham’s ultimate goal is to reach the Premier League and Sam Smith’s brilliant volley could be one of the most significant moments of their League One campaign as they moved three points clear of their promotion rivals, sparking jubilant celebrations in the away end.
Smith has been compared to Robin Van Persie after his sweet left-footed volley gave Wrexham their third win in four games and have hit form just at the right time for Phil Parkinson.
Parkinson has made it clear to the dressing room that nothing has been achieved yet and there are still nine important games left in the season however, one aspect of the Red Dragons recent success will really please the manager in particular.

Wrexham the best in League One in 2025 in vital statistic
For much of Parkinson’s reign, it has been Wrexham’s form at the Racecourse Ground that has carried them to success however, since the turn of the calendar year that form has turned on its head.
According to Playmaker stats, the Red Dragons currently boast the joint-highest amount of away points in League One in 2025 alongside Stevenage with 15 so far.
The only side in the whole of the English Football League with a better away points tally in the calendar year so far is that of Sheffield United with 18 points.
One thing that Parkinson will be aware of is the fact that their next visitors to the Racecourse Stockport are also high up on that list with 14 points, Wrexham have been taunted by Stockport many times before.
Wrexham’s away form has improved drastically
Following a 3-1 defeat at Salford in February 2024 in League Two, as per Nation.Cymru, Parkinson stated: ““We have to find a way on our travels, when the pitch isn’t great or when the team plays a certain way, to get points.”
That inconsistent away form carried on into the current campaign and at the turn of the calendar year, Wrexham had won just three games on the road and it was hampering their promotion chances.
| Wrexham’s away form in 2025 | result |
| Barnsley | lost 2-1 |
| Shrewsbury | lost 2-1 |
| Crawley | won 2-1 |
| Northampton | won 2-0 |
| Mansfield | won 2-1 |
| Huddersfield | won 1-0 |
| Reading | Lost 1-0 |
| Wycombe | won 1-0 |
After having lost the opening two away games of 2025 against Barnsley and Shrewsbury, the Red Dragons have gone on to win five of their last six and put themselves ahead in the automatic promotion race.
Parkinson needed to change things away from home and it seems that their resilient approach in keeping clean sheets is paying off as they continue to pick up points away from North Wales.
