Former Wrexham talent now in exceptional form for unbeaten league leaders after summer transfer

Wrexham made changes between the sticks this summer as Phil Parkinson altered his goalkeeping ranks during the transfer window.

Wrexham saw Arthur Okonkwo shine last season, with the former Arsenal stopper playing a key role in another promotion-winning campaign.

Surprisingly, Wrexham snapped up Danny Ward over the summer and then extended Callum Burton’s contract.

Okonkwo, Ward and Burton are strong goalkeeping options at Championship level, and Ward has been the man to start the season in goal.

Wrexham have also snapped up Reuben Egan, bringing the Irish stopper to the STōK Cae Ras on a short-term deal until January.

Two goalkeepers have arrived, but even more have left Wrexham in recent months.

Luke McNicholas enjoying dream start to the season after Wrexham exit

Mark Howard was released before joining Salford City, Brad Foster joined Ross County, and Liam Hall missed out on a move to Rotherham United after being let go by Wrexham.

Luke McNicholas also left Wrexham, completing a permanent move to National League side Forest Green Rovers.

McNicholas joined Wrexham on loan from Sligo Rovers in 2023, before completing a permanent move in January 2024.

First-team opportunities were difficult to come by, though, and McNicholas moved on after making just three appearances.

The Irishman has linked up with Robbie Savage at Forest Green Rovers, and he is enjoying a dream start to the season.

Forest Green beat Hartlepool United 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, meaning they sit two points clear at the top of the National League table.

McNicholas has kept five clean sheets in just eight games to start the campaign, and Forest Green remain unbeaten in the National League.

McNicholas may not have been able to break through with Wrexham, but he could prove to be a star man in a promotion-challenging campaign at Forest Green.

Luke McNicholas on Robbie Savage

Forest Green boss Robbie Savage has strong ties to Wrexham himself.

Savage hails from Wrexham, and he still has family in the local area, though he never actually played for Wrexham.

The former Premier League star recently stepped up from Macclesfield to take the Forest Green job and raided Wrexham to sign goalkeeper McNicholas over the summer.

Speaking to Forest Green’s official YouTube channel, McNicholas admitted that he is enjoying life under Savage, and the results show how happy Savage’s players are right now.

“Yeah, it’s good to be fair. We’re going well, eight unbeaten now. So yeah, you can tell by the results that we’re enjoying it,” said McNicholas.

“Like everyone’s walking around with a big smile on their face, enjoying our time here. So yeah, and it’s shown on the pitch,” he added.
