Wrexham helped make history this week, with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards now reacting.

Wrexham return to Championship action on Saturday with a meeting against Derby County.

Prior to that, the Red Dragons took on Reading in a Carabao Cup clash, coming away with a 2-0 win.

Wrexham are in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since the 1970s.

They will take on Welsh rivals Cardiff City in the next phase, and both sides are part of a historic moment.

Wrexham, Cardiff City and Swansea City make history

Cardiff beat Premier League outfit Burnley in the third round of the competition.

Elsewhere, Swansea City also took a Premier League scalp last week, beating Nottingham Forest.

It means for the first time ever, there are three Welsh teams in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Gary Lineker and Micah Richards have now commented on the historic feat on the Rest Is Football podcast.

Lineker said: “An interesting stat, Micah. There’s three Welsh teams through to the fourth round for the first time in the history of this competition. Cardiff, Swansea, and Wrexham. There you go.

Richards responded: “That’s a nice stat.”

Lineker continued: “It’s a nice little stat, isn’t it? And then with the draw for the next round, Swansea have been rewarded by playing Manchester City. Wrexham will play Cardiff in a, I won’t say it’s a local derby. We’ll call it an all Welsh classic because one’s on the south coast and one’s on the north coast, obviously.”

Cardiff City player wanted by Wrexham comments on Carabao Cup draw

Wrexham were linked to Callum Robinson during the 2025 summer transfer window.

He impressed in the Championship for the Bluebirds but a move did not transpire and he is now playing League One football with Cardiff this season.

Robinson commented on Wrexham after the draw, highlighting their squad size.

He said: “I think the way we’ve started the season, we’re in a positive mindset, which was shown on Tuesday night against a top team. And it’s shown throughout the season.

“It’ll be a good challenge for us. They’re in the Championship, they’ve brought a lot of players in, they’ve got a big squad. Fair play to them, they’ve got up there, and if you get to the Championship, obviously, you’ve earned it.

“But I think, us boys, we’ve started fast, we’ve done really well, and I feel like there’s nothing to fear. There was probably more fear of going Tuesday night to Burnley, away against a Premier League team, than there is probably going to Wrexham. We’ll give it a go and try and get through to the quarters.”
