Wrexham return to League One action this weekend as Phil Parkinson prepares to take on Paul Mullin’s former club Cambridge United.

Wrexham are through to the next round of the EFL Trophy after beating Crewe Alexandra 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Phil Parkinson’s record at the STōK Cae Ras is astonishing and he can add to that record this weekend.

Wrexham’s focus turns back to League One on Saturday afternoon with Cambridge United the latest visitors to the STōK Cae Ras.

Garry Monk’s side sit third-bottom of the League One table this season and have picked up just four wins from 18 league outings.

This is a game Wrexham will be strong favourites to win and Paul Mullin would no doubt love to make a big impact.

Paul Mullin quit Cambridge United for Wrexham

Mullin hasn’t been in his best form this season and has still only scored once in League One.

The Wrexham goal hero has been prolific ever since joining Wrexham in 2021 but this season has been a struggle so far.

Mullin is looking for a turning point in his season and it may well come against Cambridge.

This will be Mullin’s first game against Cambridge since deciding to leave the club in 2021.

Mullin fired Cambridge to promotion from League Two, racking up 32 goals in 46 games in a quite stunning 2020-21 campaign.

Yet just as Mullin seemed set to shine in League One, he made the bold decision to step down to the National League with Wrexham.

Mullin admitted that Rob McElhenney’s plans tempted him to Wrexham – and that belief certainly paid off.

Mullin has become a hero at Wrexham and whilst he is now in League One a little later than scheduled, he has become a sensation in this Wrexham rise.

How Cambridge reacted to Mullin exit

Mullin’s choice to leave Cambridge and join Wrexham raised more than a few eyebrows given that he was not just dropping down one league, but two.

Cambridge were certainly dented by Mullin’s departure and their frustration with his exit was clear.

Then-manager Mark Bonner told Cambridge’s official website that they made a ‘really good offer’ for Mullin to stay, but he still said no.

Bonner added that Mullin will go down in Cambridge history because of his goalscoring exploits, wishing him well for the future.

“We felt it was a really good offer from our side and the best we could offer. Regardless of where Paul ends up, he goes down in history for what he achieved for us last season and we wish him really well,” said Bonner.

“Now we have to work on a replacement in that area of the pitch and it is time to move on. Cambridge United would like to thank Paul for his significant contributions during his time at the Club and wish him all the best for the future,” he added.

Mullin went on to become a hero at Wrexham and would no doubt love to find the net against his former club in an attempt to hit a hot streak of goalscoring form again this season.
