I saw how Paul Mullin reacted to yet another big miss during Wrexham vs Crewe – it’s very telling

Wrexham took on Crewe Alexandra in an EFL Trophy Round of 32 fixture on Tuesday evening and came out on top.

It was a quiet night at the Racecourse Ground with less than 3,500 fans in attendance to watch their side in cup action.

Wrexham had already been knocked out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup ahead of kick-off, leaving this competition as their only remaining chance of silverware in 2024/25.

However, the league is obviously the priority for Wrexham at present, with Phil Parkinson completely changing his eleven for Tuesday’s match.

Despite so many changes, Wrexham beat Crewe 1-0 thanks to a late goal from academy graduate, Aaron James.

There was also a debut for the Red Dragons’ latest signing between the sticks following an injury blow to Callum Burton.

Wrexham fans praised Brad Foster after he made a number of quality saves and helped his new side keep yet another clean sheet.

Yet again though, Parkinson saw his centre-forwards lacking that killer instinct in front of goal.

How Paul Mullin reacted to his miss in Wrexham vs Crewe

Wrexham fans hit out at Modou Faal vs Crewe following a largely poor display from the former West Bromwich Albion man.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson started up front alongside Faal on the night and he too failed to provide much of a threat.

In turn, Parkinson turned to his bench in the second half in order to try and break the deadlock, with Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer and Elliot Lee all introduced.

In the end, it was a defender who scored the only goal of the game in the 79th minute but moments before that, Mullin had a chance to end his goal drought.

Sebastian Revan made his way into the box and cut the ball back to the 30-year-old who, had this game come 12 months ago, likely would have riffled the ball into the back of the net.

However, Mullin’s effort wasn’t great and he made it easy for the Crewe defender to block the shot. Rather than sulking after missing yet another chance to break his duct, however, I saw the forward with a smile on his face.

He’s clearly frustrated that the goals aren’t coming right now but that’s not stopping him from giving his all for the team.

This was demonstrated by the fact he chased down the loose ball from the corner his effort won before producing a lovely cross to James for the winner.

While the goals are still yet to arrive, Mullin appears to be keeping his spirits high, showing just what a tough character he is.

Will Paul Mullin start for Wrexham vs Cambridge United

Wrexham fans weren’t happy with Mullin vs Burton at the weekend after he missed another big chance.

The striker has one goal in 17 League One appearances this term but there is a chance he starts this weekend.

The Red Dragons are set to face off against the team they signed Mullin from all those years ago, Cambridge United.

His continued struggles in front of goal will no doubt concern Parkinson, even if he’s yet to admit it publically, but with the rest of Wrexham’s striking options also floundering, Mullin could make his first start in several weeks against his former club.
