James McClean makes ‘below-par’ claim in message to Wrexham fans as League One form takes a dive

Wrexham have struggled to recapture the form that made them so formidable in the first half of 2024/25.

Nobody, besides perhaps Wrexham fans, expected Phil Parkinson’s side to play as well as they did upon their arrival in League One.

The Red Dragons previously had the best defence in the third tier and spent several months competing alongside Birmingham City for the title and, at worst, the second automatic promotion spot.

However, goals, generally from their strikers, was a recurring issue for the Welsh outfit in the first half of the season.

They had just about been managing to get by but it was clear they needed to add a more prolific number nine to their ranks.

Wrexham signed Sam Smith late in the January transfer window which, on paper, should have sold their biggest problem.

However, other issues have begun to arise at the Racecourse Ground over the last few weeks and months as well.

James McClean message to Wrexham fans

George Dobson and Matty James are a problem for Wrexham as the duo simply don’t work well together in the same midfield trio.

Meanwhile, their once previously excellent defensive record has taken a battering – now just two clean sheets in 10 – and results have been impacted.

Following their most recent loss to Leyton Orient over the weekend, James McClean has now taken to his Instagram story to pen a message to Wrexham fans.

He wrote: “Below par night, of course we aim to win every game we play, unfortunately in football you just don’t, nobody and trust me are more frustrated than the players and staff involved when we don’t, onto Sunday with the same aim.”

What Wrexham players said after Leyton Orient

After losing to Leyton Orient, the Red Dragons have now lost back-to-back home games under Parkinson for the first time ever.

The second 45 of the match was especially disappointing for fans, who will be looking for a response against Mansfield Town on Sunday.

Following Tuesday’s defeat, Jay Rodriguez revealed what Wrexham players discussed after the game.

He said when asked about bouncing back against Mansfield: “Definitely, that’s what we’re talking about in the changing room.

“It’s a great game to be a part of because you can put things right and it gives you that extra motivation to go and do that.

“It’s an opportunity and I always look at things as opportunities, football doesn’t always go your way, I’ve always found that, but it’s how you react and put things right, work hard and keep going.”
