Wrexham have snapped up Josh Windass on a free transfer, with the former Sheffield Wednesday ace penning a three-year deal.

Phil Parkinson snapped up Ryan Hardie earlier in the window, but still wanted more attacking firepower.

Josh Windass left Sheffield Wednesday last week, ripping up his contract amid financial problems at Hillsborough.

Windass has now joined Wrexham, with Parkinson wasting little time in bringing the 31-year-old to the STōK Cae Ras.

Windass brings a proven source of Championship goals, and provides something different with his ability to get on the ball and drive forward.

Josh Windass on his attitude

The 31-year-old was one of four recent Wrexham signings, joining alongside Liberato Cacace, George Thomason and Lewis O’Brien.

Windass is likely to play a vital role for Wrexham moving forward, and he will also be a fascinating character to watch on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

The former Rangers man can be fairly straight-talking; Windass previously called Ollie Palmer ‘delusional’ for believing he could score goals for Manchester City.

Former Sheffield Wednesday youngster Joey Phuthi has also admitted being ‘disappointed’ after receiving public criticism from Windass in recent months.

On the pitch, Windass is a hard-working and committed player, and he hit back against criticism earlier in 2025.

Speaking on Open Goal earlier this year, Windass spoke about his time at Rangers alongside former teammate Andy Halliday.

Halliday touched on how Steven Gerrard believed he was a ‘bad egg’ upon taking the Rangers job, though the Scot was unclear just why that notion had emerged.

Windass added that ‘perception is the worst thing ever’, suggesting that people often come up with false narratives about players.

Windass feels that ‘everyone in football’ believes he has a bad attitude, an idea that he completely refutes.

The new Wrexham signing even highlighted that some players viewed as having ‘the best attitude ever’ are actually far from it.

“Perception is the worst thing ever. Everyone thinks I’ve got a bad attitude – everyone in football,” said Windass.

“Perception is crazy. But there’s guys online who are like, looking like they’ve got the best attitude ever and they’re out steaming every Saturday night,” he added.

Phil Parkinson will have full confidence in Josh Windass

Windass’s comments are interesting because Parkinson has made his transfer stance absolutely clear: ‘No superstars, no egos in the dressing room’.

Chatter around big names such as Jamie Vardy and Christian Eriksen hasn’t brought anything substantial, and Wrexham have instead focused elsewhere.

Windass is adamant that the perception around him is wrong, and if Parkinson has decided that he fits into this Wrexham dressing room, then we will certainly trust his stance.

Parkinson has nailed most of his Wrexham signings so far, and wouldn’t have taken any risks if he thought there was any chance of disrupting the dressing room.

The Wrexham boss is thorough with his background checks and will have certainly spoken to players and staff who have crossed paths without Windass before agreeing to sign him.

Parkinson clearly trusts and believes in Windass, and his confidence means Wrexham fans shouldn’t have much cause for concern.
