Wrexham are looking to secure a transfer for Ben Davies, who was in international action for Wales on Monday.

The Red Dragons are looking to add some more Premier League experience to their ranks in the summer transfer window.

The Wrexham Insider understands that Wrexham have spoken to Ben Davies ahead of a possible move in the coming months.

Sky Sports have since also said that this is the case, but there appeared to be a problem when Tottenham made a Davies contract decision, taking up a one-year extension in the player’s contract.

It means he will no longer be a free agent at the end of June and will now require a transfer fee for his signature.

Despite this, further reports have since claimed that Wrexham still want to sign Davies this summer.

Wrexham target Ben Davies struggles for Wales vs Belgium

Davies impressed for Wales in a World Cup qualifying fixture at the back end of last week.

Craig Bellamy’s side were once again in action on Monday evening, facing off against Belgium.

Wales were unbeaten in their first three qualifiers, but despite scoring three goals on June 9, including one from Wrexham native Harry Wilson, they lost 4-3 to the Red Devils.

Following the clash, Y Clwb Pêl-droed shared their player ratings for the tie.

They gave the Tottenham defender a 5/10 and highlighted how he struggled up against the pacey Jeremy Doku, writing: “A difficult night for the skipper, who struggled at times against the attacking brilliance of Jeremy Doku, affording him too much space to cut inside for his goal.”

Wrexham must play Ben Davies at centre-back

Wales lined up with a back-four against Belgium, and Davies was used in his natural left-back position.

However, now in his 30s, the Spurs ace really struggled when up against a pacey winger.

In recent times, Davies has largely been used as a left-sided centre-back and excelled in this role, but when out wide and up against a top star with pace, he didn’t have the best game.

Granted, Wrexham won’t be playing against Manchester City-level wingers in the Championship, but the second tier is full of pacey, tricky wingers who the ageing Davies might struggle against if used out wide.

As a result, if Davies does join Wrexham, it seems obvious he will have to be used as a left-sided centre-back in the three.

And if Wrexham want to sign a new left-back this summer, they will probably have to be much younger and quicker.
