£20m-style gamble could be just what Wrexham need to grant Rob McElhenney his wish in 25/26

Rob McElhenney has already made his feelings very clear on his ultimate goal for Wrexham.

Along with fellow actor Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham in February 2021.

The duo have since brought unrivalled success to the club, clinching their third successive promotion in April 2025.

McElhenney previously shared his ‘ultimate’ Wrexham goal with Prince William back in 2024, saying: “Our ultimate goal is to build a sustainable model that will allow us to not only get to the Premier League, but sustain in the Premier League and eventually win the Premier League and be in the Champions League.”

Meanwhile, after taking the club to the Championship for the first time since its rebrand, the Wrexham co-owner has made his feelings on the upcoming season clear.

McElhenney played down ‘consolidation’ in 2025/26, a view that has since been echoed by a Wrexham transfer chief.

But reaching the Premier League is no easy feat, especially for a club just coming up from League One.

Wrexham could follow Sunderland blueprint for Championship promotion

Wrexham have around £40m available to play with in the coming season, and that should help them improve their squad a great deal.

However, the Dragons have been told to make six to nine signings this summer, and based on some of the options linked, plenty of money is going to be spent on wages.

So, while Wrexham are expected to have a great summer, even with a big budget, they may not be able to sign enough/the best players to try and go four in a row in the coming 12 months.

But they could take a leaf out of Sunderland’s books and what they did en route to winning Championship promotion in 2024/25.

The Black Cats strengthened their squad by signing some loan players. One of those signings was Enzo Le Fee, who Sunderland brought in with an option to buy, which they have since activated for £20m, as per the Sun.

Exploring the loan market for top-class players with the view to bringing them in permanently if promotion is secured, is an avenue Wrexham could explore this summer.

It would, in theory, allow Parkinson and Co. to target higher-quality stars without impacting their overall budget too much this season.

Then, if they were to fail in their quest for promotion, said players could return to their parent teams with Wrexham having only had to pay their wages and potentially a small loan fee.

Granted, this strategy does have some risk as populating a squad with too many loan players who could leave after one season would leave Wrexham potentially needing a rebuild in the following year, but if McElhenney is serious about going for promotion again in 2025/26, it’s something the club may wish to explore.

Wrexham eye Premier League loan

Wrexham are already in contact regarding some potential loan moves this summer.

Parkinson has previously mentioned that Wrexham have been in talks for Premier League loans.

And The Wrexham Insider revealed on Saturday that Bournemouth’s Daniel Jebbison is wanted by the Red Dragons.
