Wrexham have dropped out of the top two following a draw with Cambridge United over the weekend.

Last season saw Wrexham secure promotion to League One for the first time since the competition was rebranded

Phil Parkinson has now guided the Red Dragons to back-to-back promotions and would no doubt love to make it three in a row.

Wrexham were predicted to finish 20th in League One by Opta before a ball had even been kicked – expectations they have firmly blown away.

The Hollywood-owned club are undefeated at the Racecourse Ground in 2024/25 and have the best defensive record in the third tier.

Their promotion hopes did take something of a blow this past weekend, however, with Wrexham held to a 2-2 draw by Cambridge United.

James McClean verdict on Wrexham 2024/25 season

Cambridge took an unexpected lead after 20 minutes on Saturday before Wrexham fans praised James McClean for his ‘beautiful’ equaliser.

The home side went 2-1 up following a strike from substitute Steve Fletcher but late penalty drama saw Parkinson’s men forced to settle for a point.

Wrexham have now dropped out of the automatic promotion places with both the teams above them having at least one game in hand.

However, as per Leader Live, McClean remains upbeat about the club’s season so far, claiming there are ‘no mugs’ in League One.

He said: “If you had said that at the start of the season, I don’t think anybody would have turned their nose up at that.

“We’re in a good position. There’s obviously a few games over the festive period in quick succession, we’re in a good position and ready to challenge, and we’ll keep going.

“Every game is going to be a tough test because there’s no mugs in this league.

“Cambridge, you look at the table and you would have said it is a home banker but football’s not played that way, it’s not how it works.”

James McClean assessment of Wrexham vs Cambridge

Wrexham have not played the best football of late but up until Saturday, were grinding out results.

Parkinson and co. picked up four league wins on the spin without conceding but three of those ties ended 1-0.

In the same interview, McClean stated his belief that Wrexham were below par against a side currently battling for survival.

He said: “We were below par but credit to Cambridge, they have got a lot of experienced players at this level and above.

“They came here well organised and scrapped for every ball and we can’t get sucked into that type of game.

“We didn’t play at the level we’ve shown and that’s that’s the frustrating part.

“Being  2-1 up in the last minute, we should have come away with three points and we didn’t so that is a negative but we came from a goal down to go ahead so that was positive.”

Next up for Wrexham is an away tip to Bristol Rovers on Saturday, December 21st.
