Phil Parkinson is surely very concerned as Wrexham lag behind promotion rivals in such a key area

Wrexham are looking to make it three promotions on the spin under Phil Parkinson but were dealt a blow in that pursuit over the weekend.

Wrexham faced off with Cambridge United at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday, no doubt fancying their chances of picking up another win.

The Red Dragons had earned five victories in a row across all competitions, including winning four League One matches without conceding.

They were also unbeaten at home in 2024/25, dropping points in just one match against promotion rivals, Huddersfield Town.

When all was said and done in Wales, however, Wrexham drew 2-2 with Cambridge after a late mistake from Lewis Brunt handed the away side a penalty to net the equaliser.

Meanwhile, Wycombe Wanderers and Birmingham City both picked up three points, seeing Wrexham drop outside of the automatic promotion places.

Wycombe Wanderers and Birmingham City ahead of Wrexham in key area

Wycombe have now played 19 league fixtures in 2024/25 and sit top of the table with 43 points.

Birmingham are currently second with 42 points but have played one game less than Matt Bloomfield’s men.

Wrexham, on the other hand, are now on 41 points but have played one more match than Wycombe and two more than Birmingham.

Promotion via the top two is not out of the question by any means at this stage but it’s becoming pretty clear where Phil Parkinson’s side are lagging behind their rivals.

When looking at the best minutes-per-goal rates across the top four tiers of English football, Wycombe are second on the list with 40 minutes per goal – only Chelsea (39 minutes) have a better record.

Birmingham are also scoring a lot, averaging a goal in every 48 minutes of football they play – the seventh-best in the EFL and second in League One.

Wrexham, meanwhile, have scored four fewer goals than Birmingham and a staggering 13 less than Wycombe despite playing at least 90 minutes more than both teams.

Wrexham set to address lack of goals scored

The likes of Ollie Rathbone, Max Cleworth and Elliot Lee have all been chipping in on the goal front this term.

But if Wrexham are to start rivaling the likes of Wycombe and Birmingham, their strikers are going to have to step up.

Ollie Palmer is currently the club’s top-scoring striker (who is fit) with a worryingly low three goals.

However, that could and hopefully will change in January as Wrexham want to sign a striker.

Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley has been linked but it remains to be seen if the Red Devils will let him leave.

Wheatley scored for Man Utd’s U21s over the weekend and now has six goals in eight Premier League two appearances this season.
