Ollie Rathbone scored the only goal of the game to hand Wrexham the win over Barnsley in midweek.

Wrexham continued their dominance at the Racecourse Ground in 2024/25 when they welcomed the Yorkshire outfit.

The Red Dragons were looking to close the gap on league leaders Wycombe Wanderers when they faced off with Barnsley and were able to do exactly that.

An injury blow to Wrexham goalkeeper Callum Burton was a big negative from the match but, overall, it was a solid display.

Barnsley had chances and did test substitute shot-stopper Mark Howard on occasions but it was the Welsh outfit who had the better of the opportunities on the night.

Ben Killip was called upon on more than one occasion to keep the likes of Elliot Lee and Matty James out.

Paul Mullin was praised by Wrexham fans when he came off the bench as well, though the striker once again couldn’t find the net.

Lewis Brunt named Wrexham Man of the Match vs Barnsley

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 92nd minute when Ollie Rathbone scored from the edge of the box to hand Wrexham a 1-0 win vs Barnsley.

Outside of his goal, Rathbone worked his socks off and put on arguably his best display since joining the club from Rotherham United over the summer.

However, it was not Rathbone who Wrexham fans voted as their Man of the Match on the night.

As revealed by the club’s official website, the midfielder earned 14 percent of the vote versus Barnsley, with sub-goalkeeper Howard coming third with 12 percent.

Lewis Brunt, meanwhile, somewhat surprisingly picked up the award with a very impressive 19 percent of fans choosing him as their player of the game.

Lewis Brunt Wrexham stats vs Barnsley

The centre-back had previously found minutes hard to come by this season following his summer transfer from Leicester City.

However, Phil Parkinson has now started the Englishman in the club’s last three games, all of which have ended in wins and clean sheets.

Wrexham legend Andy Morrell praised Brunt after Lincoln City last week and he was once again solid on Tuesday.

Granted, he was perhaps not the best player in the game and Rathbone may feel hard done by in the Man of the Match voting.

But Brunt’s stats against Barnsley were very good and he has surely done enough to keep his place this weekend when Wrexham travel to Burton.
