Ollie Rathbone’s Wrexham comparison comes true right in front of Sir Alex Ferguson

Wrexham grabbed yet another home win on Saturday afternoon, beating Peterborough United 1-0 at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham were back at home on Saturday afternoon as Peterborough United visited North Wales.

Former Wrexham favourite and now-Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson expected a real battle and that’s how it panned out.

Wrexham left it late to win the game with substitute Steven Fletcher popping up late in the day to snatch a 1-0 victory.

This was the perfect response after losing at Barnsley on New Year’s Day, with Wrexham benefiting from home comforts once again.

Phil Parkinson’s home record at Wrexham is exceptional and Saturday’s result only added another win to his tally.

Ollie Rathbone claim comes true in front of Sir Alex Ferguson

Wrexham’s winner came on 87 minutes with substitute Steven Fletcher yet again scoring from the bench.

Fletcher has now scored in four home games in a row – all when coming off the bench.

Wrexham just don’t know when the game is done and the tendency to score late goals is becoming a real focus.

Fletcher has praised Wrexham’s late shows, believing that Parkinson has instilled ‘incredible’ belief in the Wrexham squad.

This trait has been displayed on a number of occasions now with Wrexham scoring in added time to beat Barnsley in December.

Ollie Rathbone compared Wrexham to Manchester United after that result with the midfielder scoring the winner himself.

Rathbone was schooled at United and believed that Wrexham were showing traits from Sir Alex Ferguson’s United teams.

United would regularly score goals late on, creating a winning mentality and a never-say-die attitude on their way to winning so many trophies.

That comparison may have been a little lofty but Wrexham proved it on Saturday with yet another late winning goal – and it was right in front of the legendary Ferguson.

Ferguson visited the STōK Cae Ras to support his son Darren, but watched on as Wrexham called on that United spirit to grab a late winner.

Ferguson will have been disappointed to see his son on the losing side, but would have surely been impressed with how Wrexham found the later winner.

Sir Alex Ferguson message to Phil Parkinson

Wrexham’s penchant for late goals may well lead to success this season, not too dissimilar to how United were such a winning machine under Ferguson.

The man behind it all is Parkinson, with the Wrexham boss continuing to pick up results in the STōK Cae Ras dugout.

Parkinson brought up 1000 games as a manager on Saturday with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds praising his impact.

Sir Alex Ferguson also offered praise for Parkinson in a brief message on Wrexham’s official YouTube channel.

“Hiya Phil, 1000 games is fantastic – what an achievement,” said Ferguson.

“You’ve got many great, exciting journeys on the way so I wish you great success in your management, maybe not today, but other than that, well done,” he added.

Ferguson has respect for what Wrexham are doing under Parkinson and long may these late goals continue – even if it isn’t helping the blood pressure of Wrexham fans.
