Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is busy preparing to face Exeter City but saw his reserves rack up a big win on Tuesday afternoon.

The League One promotion race is heading towards its conclusion and Wrexham are in a golden position.

Wrexham beat Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to reclaim second place in the League One table.

Wycombe Wanderers have a game in hand on Wrexham, but Phil Parkinson would probably take points on the board over games in hand.

Wrexham are tantalisingly close to a third straight promotion, but Parkinson has warned his players to stay focused.

Exeter City are next up for Wrexham this weekend and fringe players have been given a chance to shine ahead of the trip to Devon.

Paul Mullin scored in Wrexham reserves clash

Tuesday afternoon saw Wrexham’s reserves in Central League action, hosting Mansfield Town at Colliers Park.

Wrexham AFC Archive have posted the lineup from Tuesday’s game with a strong side named under David Jones.

The headline inclusion was Paul Mullin as the striker was given a chance to shine alongside Modou Faal in attack.

Mullin has been out of favour recently, not even making the bench for Wrexham in recent weeks.

Wrexham fans have been questioning Mullin’s future, but he put all the speculation to one side on Tuesday.

Mullin scored Wrexham’s second goal in a 4-0 Wrexham victory with Max Purvis and Dan Scarr scoring either side of Mullin’s strike.

The final goal was scored by Ollie Palmer, with the target man also out of favour alongside Mullin since the end of the January transfer window.

Palmer didn’t start on Tuesday, but he came off the bench to score the fourth goal in a comfortable win.

This was a reminder of the goalscoring quality both Mullin and Palmer possess despite several weeks out of the team.

Whether that leads to first-team opportunities again remains to be seen, but the clamour for them to return may only grow louder after Tuesday’s goals.

Wrexham talking points from reserves victory

Mullin wasn’t the only first-team name in action.

Callum Burton is accelerating his return from injury, and the goalkeeper started against Mansfield, picking up a clean sheet in the process.

Summer signing Scarr started in defence whilst Yassine Toure, son of former Arsenal defender Kolo Toure, featured at right wing back.

Jacob Mendy and George Evans also started, whilst youngsters Josh Adam and Harry Ashfield were given chances to shine in midfield.

Naming this kind of team in a reserve team game is just astonishing, and it’s no surprise that Mansfield were swept aside convincingly.

Those involved will hope to have caught Parkinson’s eye on Tuesday, with players no doubt desperate to play a part in another potential promotion in the final weeks of the season.
