Paul Mullin could still win one Wrexham award this season, even if he doesn’t play again for Phil Parkinson

Wrexham dropped two points on Tuesday night, drawing 2-2 away at Cambridge United to leave Phil Parkinson frustrated.

Wrexham beat Exeter City 2-0 over the weekend and were back on the road again on Tuesday night.

A trip to relegation-threatened Cambridge was certainly winnable, and Wrexham took the lead with George Dobson scoring his first league goal.

Cambridge found a leveller through Liam Bennett before Josh Stokes fired the hosts in front from the penalty spot.

Phil Parkinson raged at that penalty decision, but Wrexham did find an equaliser, with former Cambridge striker Sam Smith scoring a brilliant header.

Wrexham couldn’t find a winner, but Shrewsbury Town at least held Wycombe Wanderers to a 0-0 draw to ease the frustration.

Paul Mullin could still win Wrexham award

Paul Mullin was again left out of the Wrexham squad, as has often been the case since the end of the January transfer window.

Mullin was gutted to miss out on a return to Cambridge, having previously enjoyed his time with the club before joining Wrexham in 2021.

Wrexham fans are still left wondering just why Mullin is out of the side and will fear that he has already played his final game for the club.

That could be the case, but Mullin will still be in contention for a Wrexham award come the end of the season – even if he doesn’t kick another ball this term.

Mullin’s run of three Player of the Season awards is set to come to an end, but he will be a strong contender for the Steve Edwards Goal of the Season award.

Ryan Barnett won last year’s award for a beautiful volley, and Mullin has a strong case to win this year’s.

Mullin’s volley against Blackpool on Boxing Day was simply exceptional, controlling the ball on his knee before smashing a dipping strike into the net from long range.

Mullin won the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month award for December with that strike and will surely expect to be one of the favourites to win Wrexham’s Goal of the Season award.

There will be more goals to come as Wrexham chase a third straight promotion, but anybody would do well to match the technique and quality Mullin showed with this strike.

Other contenders for the Wrexham Goal of the Season award

That goal will always be a great reminder of the quality Mullin possesses, no matter what happens with his future.

Mullin’s last kick at the STōK Cae Ras was, as things stand, a saved penalty against Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy.

That would make for an unsuitably low-key departure, and we still hope to see Mullin not only in action for Wrexham again but also scoring more goals.

There will be other goals in contention for the Goal of the Season award, though, and Jack Marriott’s strike on the first day of the League One season will be up there.

Marriott controlled Ollie Palmer’s flicked on his chest before brilliantly volleying into the roof of the net.

Mullin loved Marriott’s goal, and that strike could be his main competition for the award, though others spring to mind.

Sam Smith’s volley at Wycombe Wanderers was a moment of brilliance, whilst Ollie Rathbone’s drive and finish to beat Barnsley deserves a shout.

There have been more than a few instances of sweeping team moves leading to goals from Ryan Barnett crosses, too, such as Ollie Palmer’s header against Exeter City.

Mullin has a great chance to win this award, though – and potentially end his Wrexham career on a high.
