Paul Mullin is away on loan at Wigan Athletic, finally getting some game time and goals following his struggles at Wrexham last season.

Paul Mullin played a huge part in firing Wrexham out of the National League and then out of League Two. But last season the striker scored just three goals in 26 League One appearances, barely featuring in the second half of last season and then leaving the club on loan this summer.

Mullin joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan and he has since scored twice in six games for the Latics, including scoring his first league goal in the club’s last outing as Wigan drew 2-2 with Rotherham United.

Paul Mullin has a subtle message for Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson

Speaking on BBC Sounds after scoring his first league goal for the Latics, Mullin had a lot to say. Mullin started that game on the bench and he came on to the pitch with less than 10 minutes to play, scoring an important late equaliser against strong opponents in Rotherham United.

Mullin explained how he hates being on the bench in what might be viewed as a subtle dig to Phil Parkinson at Wrexham. Parkinson often started Mullin on the bench last season before deciding to completely exile him in the second half of the campaign.

“I don’t like being on the bench,” Mullin stated. “I want to play football as much as I can. You only get one career so you want to play as many times as you can. That’s it.”

Will Paul Mullin ever play for Wrexham again?

Since Mullin left the Racecourse, Wrexham have signed several new players, including multiple attackers. The pick of the bunch is Nathan Broadhead. Wrexham have signed Broadhead in a £10m deal making him the club’s most expensive ever player.

Elsewhere, Kieffer Moore scored his first two goals for Wrexham last time out in the 2-2 draw against Sheffield Wednesday, whilst Josh Windass has featured but has since picked up an injury.

With Wrexham pushing on with new signings and adding more and more quality, it’s certainly looking like Mullin’s time with the club is truly over.

But if he can score a number of goals this season and Wrexham end up either staying in the Championship, or worse yet being relegated back to League One, there may be a chance for Mullin to resurrect his career in North Wales.
