Wrexham play host to Paul Mullin’s former club Cambridge United on Saturday, December 14th.

The Red Dragons have won their last five games, most recently beating Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Trophy.

Wrexham return to League One action on Saturday, taking on Cambridge United in a 3pm kick-off.

The tie is taking place at the Racecourse Ground, making Phil Parkinson’s side heavy favourites for the win given they are yet to lose on home soil this term.

Cambridge are no pushover despite their league position, however, falling to defeat just once in their last five.

With the battle for automatic promotion so tight right now, it’s a big game for Wrexham but it is a particularly massive clash for Paul Mullin.

Paul Mullin has already revealed why he left Cambridge United for Wrexham

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchased Wrexham back in February of 2021, with Mullin the first marquee signing under the Hollywood duo.

The now 30-year-old made the move to the Racecourse in July 2021, leaving Cambridge on a free transfer.

Cambridge offered Mullin a new contract before he joined Wrexham, but the striker opted to drop down two divisions and ply his trade in the National League.

Cynical fans may suggest this was done for monetary reasons or because of the profile McElhenney and Reynolds have.

However, Mullin, speaking to The Guardian in April 2024, has already revealed the ‘main reason’ he opted to leave Cambridge and move to Wrexham.

He said: “Obviously, I want to play at the highest level possible. I’d love to play for Wales, the country where my nan was born.

“But in terms of leaving the club it’s never something I think about. I signed a new contract with Wrexham in January because I absolutely adore it. I come home every day and see Albi [his son], which is the main reason I signed in the first place.”

Phil Parkinson on Paul Mullin’s lack of goals for Wrexham

Mullin has been a sensational signing for the Red Dragons and will no doubt go down as one of, if not the greatest player in the club’s history.

However, the striker is struggling for goals in 2024/25, finding the back of the net just once the league.

Parkinson commented on Mullin’s lack of goals for Wrexham a few weeks ago but does not seem to worried.

He said: “I had a good chat with Paul. I said that we need to make sure that we’re not putting massive expectations on him. He’s had a serious operation in the summer, missing not just the pre-season, but the whole of the off-season as well.

”He was a long way behind the other lads, but I put him back on the bench quickly. That doesn’t mean he was really match-ready. He’s getting opportunities, and Paul is great. He doesn’t let things affect him when he doesn’t take those as he knows there’s another chance coming round the corner.

“The life of a goal scorer is such that at times it doesn’t go your way, but it’s making sure those dips don’t last too long, and he’ll come through that.”
