Phil Parkinson claims Wrexham star ‘getting ever closer’ to first-team return amid ‘brilliant’ training comeback

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson may hope to sign a new striker in the January transfer window but has a goalscorer returning to action soon.

The January transfer window is open but the first week has passed without incoming business at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham have remained quiet so far but the focus may now turn to incoming business.

Wrexham’s clash with Port Vale was postponed on Tuesday, meaning Phil Parkinson’s next game is only in a week’s time.

That certainly gives the key decision makers inside Wrexham some time to focus on incoming deals.

Reports suggest that Wrexham want to sign another striker and whilst that may happen, Parkinson will have another attacking option at his disposal.

Phil Parkinson on Jack Marriott return

Wrexham fans have been used to seeing Paul Mullin as the club’s leading goal threat in recent years.

Mullin has struggled in League One though and it was actually Jack Marriott impressing in front of goal earlier this season.

Marriott hit four goals in nine League One games to start the season and looked undroppable in the Wrexham attack.

Sadly, Marriott picked up an injury in October with early expectations suggesting a four-month lay-off.

That would take Marriott to mid-February but the striker appears to be ramping up his return.

Marriott was back in light training just before Christmas and he seems to be even closer to a return now.

Speaking to The Leader, Parkinson admitted that Marriott is ‘getting ever closer’ in terms of playing competitive action.

Parkinson added that Marriott is ‘not far away’ and seeing him back in training again has been truly ‘brilliant’.

“Jack Marriott is getting ever closer for us,” said Parkinson.

“He is not far away and it is brilliant to see him out on the training ground because he had such an amazing start of the season,” he added.

Jack Marriott record a reminder over January signings

Marriott joined Wrexham on deadline day last January and actually had a slow start to life at the club.

As Wrexham won promotion from League Two, Marriott scored just one goal in his first 17 appearances for the club.

That goal came in Wrexham’s penultimate home game of the season, finding the net in a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers to seal promotion.

Marriott’s slow start prompted questions about his role at Wrexham but he quickly silenced any doubters early in the season.

There is a message in there for this January too; don’t write anybody off from a slow start.

Joining a new club in the middle of the season is never easy and anybody who joins Wrexham this month deserves time to find form and come just as important as Marriott has this season.
