Ex-Premier League ace shares why Wrexham transfer would be a ‘big ask’ for Jamie Vardy

The remarkable Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds experience continues at Wrexham, with a third straight promotion now confirmed.

Saturday will go down as one of the truly great days in the life of a Wrexham fan.

Wycombe Wanderers lost at Leyton Orient earlier on Saturday, teeing up the chance of a third straight promotion for Wrexham.

If there were any nerves in the Wrexham camp against Charlton Athletic, they didn’t show; Phil Parkinson’s side were simply brilliant.

Wrexham beat Charlton 3-0 as Ollie Rathbone opened the scoring before Sam Smith added a brace, including one acrobatic volley in front of the Tech End.

Phil Parkinson has already discussed Wrexham’s summer plans but seemed to rule out a move for Jamie Vardy.

Nigel Reo-Coker on Jamie Vardy

We have become used to seeing Wrexham being linked with big names.

The Hollywood influence of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’s 2021 takeover means high-profile names are always mentioned alongside Wrexham.

Humphrey Ker has been asked Kevin De Bruyne, with the Belgian star set to leave Manchester City.

That deal almost certainly won’t be happening, and we would also be surprised to see Jamie Vardy join Wrexham.

Vardy is departing Leicester City and fans across England immediately suggested a move to Wrexham.

Former Premier League ace Nigel Reo-Coker has now told CBS Sports that he really doesn’t see Vardy to Wrexham happening.

Reo-Coker believes Vardy doesn’t have the legs to be a regular starter in the Championship, suggesting that the game is too frantic at this level.

Reo-Coker feels it would be a ‘big ask’ to expect Vardy to make a big impact for Wrexham on a weekly basis, and just doesn’t see the move materialising.

“Jamie Vardy a couple of years ago, for sure, but Jamie Vardy now is not the same Jamie Vardy,” said Reo-Coker.

“You talk about the physicality of the Championship, it’s a lot more demanding and end-to-end than the Premier League. The Premier League is more short, intensive spurts when you need that bit of quality.

“The Championship is like this [back and forth], does Jamie Vardy have the legs to still be doing it at that level? I don’t think so. It’s a great name to add to it, but to have him play every single week to help your team to do well, I think it’s a tough task, I think it’s a big ask,” he added.

Steven Fletcher key to Wrexham’s striking recruitment

We would not doubt that Vardy could still score goals in the Championship at 38.

Vardy may have lost a touch of pace, but he is still an absolute pest in the final third and remains a great finisher.

We just can’t see Wrexham adding another 38-year-old striker, especially if Steven Fletcher stays put.

The Scot is out of contract this summer and, as things stand, his Wrexham future is unclear.

Fletcher seemingly wants to continue his playing career, and his impact off the bench this season makes us believe that he will be given another contract.

Jay Rodriguez and Jack Marriott are also in their 30’s, and adding Vardy into this squad just doesn’t quite add up for us unless Fletcher moves on.

A younger striker, possibly in a similar age range as January signing Sam Smith, would surely be the priority – especially after seeing Smith’s huge impact in the promotion race.
