Wrexham are currently reeling following their bitterly disappointing derby defeat at the hands of Shrewsbury Town.

Phil Parkinson’s men succumbed to a 2-1 defeat despite Steven Fletcher impressing fans with his performance after notching his fifth goal in seven appearances.

Parkinson accepted his players deserved criticism after the game but that now their sole focus was on preparing for their huge League One clash with Birmingham City at the Racecourse Ground.

Away from the promotion race, the draw for the quarter finals of the EFL Trophy has taken place and it could bring about an intriguing clash against one of Phil Parkinson’s former sides.

Wrexham could face Bolton Wanderers in EFL Trophy Quarter Final

Wrexham’s EFL Trophy clash with Port Vale was postponed and the last-16 clash has now been re-arranged for Tuesday 4th February 2025.

Should Wrexham manage to overcome the League Two side, they would face Parkinson’s former side Bolton Wanderers at home in the quarter final.

That quarter final tie would potentially be played the week commencing the 10th February – one week after the last-16 clash against Port Vale.

Wrexham are in the Northern section of the EFL Trophy draw with a potential route to Wembley on the cards for the Red Dragons should they win their next three games in the competition.

EFL Trophy last chance for silverware this season

Following the defeat to Shrewsbury Town, Wrexham are now two points behind leaders Birmingham with the Blues having played three games fewer.

Realistic ambitions of winning the League One title are slipping away, meaning the EFL Trophy could be the last chance of silverware for the Wrexham squad this season.

Wrexham’s last trip to Wembley Stadium ended in heartbreak following a 1-0 defeat to Bromley in the FA Trophy final. Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were in attendance for the game.

Another trip to Wembley would certainly build excitement amongst the fans once again and Parkinson will be sure to want to get one over on his old club Bolton should his side progress past Port Vale.
