Wrexham have sanctioned several exits during the 2025 winter transfer window and Phil Parkinson has now explained the reasoning behind one.
After a solid spell on loan with Halifax Town in the first half of the current campaign, Billy Waters has joined Oldham Athletic on a permanent basis.
Meanwhile, Jake Bickerstaff extended his stay at Altrincham after joining the National League side on loan over the summer.
Neither player is a good enough striker to play regularly in League One this season so both deals make sense.
Bickerstaff remains under contract at Wrexham until 2026 but it’s hard to see him having much of a future at the club, even if he performs well on loan in the coming months.
Elsewhere this week, Brad Foster signed a new contract with the Red Dragons that will keep him in Wales until the end of 2024/25 with the option of a 12-month extension.

Phil Parkinson opens up on Wrexham January exit
Foster is one of three free agents signed by Phil Parkinson in the 2024/25 season, with Matty James earning a new contract as well following his excellent form in the last few months.
James arrived at the Racecourse Ground in October alongside former Bolton Wanderers striker, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.
The midfielder is now a regular starter for the Welsh outfit but Bodvarsson really struggled to garner any meaningful playing time.
Now, Burton Albion’s manager has dubbed Bodvarsson ‘valuable’ after securing the centre-forward following the expiration of his deal with the Red Dragons this week.
Parkinson has also opened up on his exit as per Leader Live, explaining why they let the ex-Bolton man depart.
He said: “Jon needed to go and play somewhere for his own career,
“We couldn’t guarantee him game time and he wanted to play because he’s still young enough to continue in his career.”

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson Wrexham stats
Bodvarsson made his Wrexham debut on November 9th, 2024, coming off the bench for 15 minutes in a 1-0 win over Mansfield Town.
He then started his first game for the Red Dragons a few days later, playing 63 minutes in a defeat to Stockport County.
The Icelandic forward only made two more League One appearances for a total of 11 minutes.
Bodvarsson is clearly a talented player but with no goals in seven appearances across all competitions, it makes sense why Wrexham let him go.
It’s just a shame things didn’t work out differently for the striker, who fans no doubt wish well for the future.
