The rise of Wrexham through the English pyramid has been likened to that of a Hollywood movie, due to the owners of the club; however, previously it may have been described as a fairytale.

Throughout the history of football there have been moments where the underdogs have defied all the odds to lift silverware and bring glory to their fans, with examples including Greece in Euro 2004, Porto in the Champions League under Jose Mourinho and Nottingham Forest winning the English top flight under Brian Clough.

Wrexham are currently going through this, and Phil Parkinson was the man to deliver this to the club following the takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

However, the Red Dragons manager has huge admiration for one underdog story in particular as he prepares his side to travel to the King Power.

Phil Parkinson believes Leicester City’s Premier League title was a ‘fairytale story’

Speaking ahead of Wrexham’s first clash with Leicester City in 43 years, the Red Dragons boss had huge admiration for the Foxes as a club and what they achieved in 2016.

Claudio Ranieri led his Leicester side to the top-flight title against all the odds in a historic campaign, a feat that may never be repeated again.

As reported by The Leader, Phil Parkinson spoke about the moment the Foxes became champions of England.

He said: “It was an amazing, fairytale story. For Leicester to win the Premier League, it was one of the biggest underdog stories in sport, never mind just football.”

Repeat of Norwich City demanded by Phil Parkinson against Leicester City

Wrexham can win three consecutive away games in the second tier for the first time ever should they beat Leicester at the King Power in the Championship.

It would also be the first time Wrexham ever beat Leicester in the league should they manage to bring the three points back to the Racecourse Ground.

In order to achieve this history, Parkinson is looking to discover a performance similar to that of the one they had against Norwich City.

He said: “The teams which come down with the parachute payment always carry that Premier League quality.

“It was one of the fixtures which stood out when the fixtures came out in June.

“We are going to go there and look to play with the same positivity which we’ve done at Norwich.”
