Phil Parkinson is going to extreme lengths to do his ‘homework’ on Wigan Athletic and get Wrexham promoted

After a successful weekend, Wrexham need to stay focused and get the job done against Wigan Athletic on Saturday, with Phil Parkinson leaving no stone unturned.

Wrexham cruised to a 3-0 win against Burton Albion on Saturday with goals from Steven Fletcher, Sam Smith, and Jack Marriott sealing victory and a crucial three points in the promotion race.

To make things even sweeter, Wycombe Wanderers fell to defeat against Reading at the weekend, meaning Wrexham now have a six-point cushion in second place.

Wycombe’s game in hand, against Huddersfield on Tuesday night, will be a big moment in the promotion race, but Wrexham now know they just have to keep winning and they will be in the Championship next season.

Phil Parkinson travelling hundreds of miles to watch Wigan in action

We already know Phil Parkinson is taking nothing for granted. The Wrexham boss told his players to stay focused after the results at the weekend, and now, it seems Parkinson himself is going to great lengths to make sure everything goes smoothly from here on out.

On the preparation he and the Wrexham coaching staff are putting in ahead of the weekend’s clash with Wigan Athletic, Parkinson told The Athletic: “Our homework has to be absolutely spot on. We cannot be distracted.”

Turns out, Parkinson will not be taking a break at all this week, and will instead embark on a 440-mile round trip down to Devon to watch Wigan take on Exeter City on Tuesday night.

Indeed, he won’t even be paying attention to the action from Huddersfield as Wycombe look to close the gap, instead focusing on what his team can influence, starting with their next opponents.

Still, we would imagine Parkinson will at least have the Wycombe score updates popping up on his phone throughout the game, surely.

Wrexham could be nine points clear come the weekend

While supercomputers have predicted Wrexham’s fate already, and offered good news in the promotion race, it will obviously all come down to what actually happens on the pitch over the next month or so.

There is a very real possibility, though, that Wrexham could wake up on Sunday morning nine points clear with just four games to go. That, of course, would be assuming that Wycombe lose to Huddersfield and then again to Stevenage at the weekend, with Wrexham defeating Wigan in the process.

That would be a dream scenario for Wrexham, who would then just need to win one of their remaining four fixtures to seal their promotion, all being well.

The only lingering threat really, at this point, is the fact that both Stockport and Charlton Athletic are in good form and are not all that far behind Wycombe at all.

Still, the beauty of Wrexham’s situation, regardless of what happens around them, is that their fate is in their own hands from here on out.
